SAT Problem Solving and Data Analysis Strategy
Translate the context into quantities and units, choose the correct proportional or statistical model, and interpret the answer without overstating the evidence.
Strong data reasoning separates calculation from the claim it supports
The arithmetic may be short, but the difficult step is deciding what the quantities, sample, model and result actually mean.
Use the official domain map. College Board describes Problem Solving and Data Analysis as quantitative reasoning with ratios, rates, proportional relationships and units, plus analysing one- and two-variable data. Its listed skills also include percentages, probability, conditional probability, inference, margin of error and evaluating statistical claims. Label the skill before solving so that practice review can distinguish content errors from reading or interpretation errors.
For ratios and rates, define the compared quantities in the order requested and keep units attached. A unit rate expresses one quantity per one unit of another. Proportional relationships have a constant ratio and can be written with a constant of proportionality, while a relationship with a nonzero starting value may be linear without being proportional. Convert units before substitution and check whether the final unit matches the question.
For percentages, identify the base quantity before applying a change. A percent increase or decrease is measured relative to the original value, and repeated changes use multiplication rather than simple addition. Distinguish percentage points from percent change. In multistep contexts such as tax, discount, concentration or growth, write each factor explicitly and apply it to the correct stage.
For one-variable data, connect center, spread, shape and possible outliers. The mean uses every value and can be sensitive to extremes; the median depends on order and can be more resistant. Interpret range, interquartile range and standard deviation according to what the question provides. A summary statistic should describe the actual distribution and units rather than becoming an isolated formula.
For two-variable data, read axes, units, direction, form and strength before interpreting a model. A line of best fit can estimate values within a reasonable range, while extrapolation beyond observed data needs caution. Residuals compare observed and predicted values. Association between variables does not by itself prove that changing one variable causes the other to change.
Probability questions require a clearly defined sample space. Conditional probability restricts attention to a stated subgroup, so the denominator changes. For inference, ask how the sample was selected, whether assignment was random, what population is represented and how margin of error affects precision. Random sampling supports generalisation to a population; random assignment supports cause-and-effect conclusions in a well-designed experiment.
