Begin by classifying the question. If the options mainly differ in punctuation, treat the item as Boundaries. If they differ in words, verb forms, pronouns or sentence structures, treat it as Form Structure and Sense. This first classification prevents random rule switching.

For Boundaries, locate subject-verb units and determine whether each side can stand as an independent clause. Two independent clauses need a valid boundary such as a period, semicolon or a comma with an appropriate coordinating conjunction. A dependent clause or phrase usually cannot be separated from what it completes by arbitrary strong punctuation. Colons and dashes must fit both the grammar and the logical introduction.

For Form Structure and Sense, check the tested relationship rather than relying on sound. Verify subject-verb agreement, tense and sequence, pronoun reference and case, modifier placement, parallel structure and complete sentence formation. Spoken patterns can hide written errors, especially when a long phrase separates the subject and verb. Strip away nonessential material temporarily to expose the core relationship.

Use meaning as a final control. Grammatically possible choices can differ in who performs an action, what a pronoun refers to or whether a list remains parallel. Read the completed sentence from the beginning and confirm that it expresses the intended logic. On the digital SAT, passages are short, so the surrounding one or two sentences often provide the tense, referent or contrast needed for the decision.

Build practice by rule family. Filter official questions for Standard English Conventions, solve small untimed sets and write the clause map or grammar reason for every choice. Then mix Boundaries with Form Structure and Sense under time so the student must diagnose without a label. Review correct guesses and keep an error log that names the sentence structure, wrong assumption and corrected rule.
