USA Test-Optional Admissions Guide for Nepali Students 2026–2027

Decide whether to submit SAT using the exact university policy, scholarship rules, academic context and the strength of the complete application.

Quick answer

Test-optional does not mean tests are useless or that admission is easier. EducationUSA says students may choose to submit scores when they believe the result strengthens the application. Check the exact university, programme, scholarship and intake policy before deciding.

Policy changes: A university may change requirements by year or applicant group. Use the current official admissions page, not an old list.

Decide strategically

When a SAT score may help

A score may provide additional evidence when it is strong in the context of the university, supports academic readiness, balances a grading system unfamiliar to the reader or is relevant to scholarship consideration. It may be less useful when the score is weaker than the rest of the application and the policy truly allows omission.

Do not use an unofficial national conversion to decide. Compare the score with published university information and the strength of grades, course rigor, essays, activities and recommendations.

Check hidden exceptions

Admission is not the only policy

Test-optional admission may not automatically apply to merit awards, honours programmes, certain majors, athletes, placement or homeschooled applicants. International students may have separate documentation. English proficiency is usually a distinct requirement.

With-score and without-score files

For a with-score plan, schedule SAT early enough for preparation, retesting if appropriate and official reporting. For a without-score plan, strengthen the transcript explanation, essays, recommendations, activities and other requested evidence. Test-optional does not remove deadlines or lower academic expectations.

Use the SAT requirements guide and application documents checklist.

Separate graduate policy

GRE and GMAT are programme-specific

Graduate, MBA and doctoral programmes control GRE or GMAT requirements separately. A university-wide undergraduate SAT policy says nothing about a business school or graduate department. Check the exact programme and intake. MKS supports GRE and GMAT preparation only where the score is required or strategically useful.

Avoid policy mistakes

Final verification before submission

  • Confirm applicant type and intake year.
  • Check international-student eligibility.
  • Read scholarship and honours rules.
  • Confirm English proficiency separately.
  • Record the score-reporting deadline.
  • Save the official policy page.
  • Recheck before submitting the application.

Cost-aware decision

Use a simple submit-or-withhold score test

First confirm whether the policy applies to international students, the selected major, the scholarship route and the exact intake. Then compare the score with the university’s published context, if available. Submit when the result adds clear evidence of readiness; withhold when the policy allows it and the score would distract from stronger academic evidence.

FAQ

USA test-optional admissions FAQs

What does test-optional mean for USA universities?

It generally means an applicant may choose whether to submit a specified standardised test score. The university still reviews the rest of the application and policies can differ by programme or intake.

Does test-optional mean SAT is not accepted?

No. EducationUSA says students may still submit scores if they believe the scores strengthen the application. Verify the institution’s current policy.

Is test-optional the same as test-blind?

No. Test-optional may allow consideration of submitted scores, while a test-blind policy does not use the specified score in admission. Universities define their own terms.

Can international students apply test-optional?

Sometimes, but policies may differ for international applicants, scholarships, athletes or specific majors. Check the official page for the exact intake.

Does test-optional waive English proficiency?

Usually not automatically. Academic admission tests and English-proficiency requirements are separate. Verify IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo policies.

Can MKS Education help decide whether to submit SAT?

Yes. MKS Education can compare the university policy and the student’s score with the full application. No score guarantees admission or scholarship.
