USA Student Health Insurance Guide for Nepali Students 2026–2027
Compare university health plans, coverage terms, waiver rules, travel protection and pre-departure medical documents before studying in the USA.
Check the university’s international-student insurance rule first. Many schools offer or require a student health plan, and a waiver may need equivalent coverage and approval. Compare what the policy actually pays, not only the premium.
Health and financial caution: Coverage, eligibility and medical needs are individual. Use the official plan document and qualified medical or insurance advice; this guide does not diagnose or recommend a specific policy.
Health insurance and travel cover are different
HealthCare.gov says a school student health plan can be an easy way to obtain basic coverage. CDC explains that travel disruption insurance, travel health insurance and medical evacuation insurance cover different events. A short travel policy may end after arrival and is not automatically a substitute for the university’s term coverage.
| Coverage | Purpose | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Student health plan | Medical coverage during enrolment | University requirement, dates and network |
| Travel health insurance | Short-term medical costs during travel | End date and exclusions |
| Medical evacuation | Emergency transport in covered situations | Destination and medical criteria |
| Trip disruption | Cancellation or interruption costs | Covered reasons and refund limits |
Premium is only the starting point
| Term | Meaning | Question |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | Amount paid for coverage | Monthly, term or annual? |
| Deductible | Amount paid before certain benefits begin | Individual and family amount? |
| Copay | Fixed amount for a service | Different for clinic, specialist or emergency? |
| Coinsurance | Percentage of covered cost paid by student | After deductible and in network? |
| Out-of-pocket maximum | Plan limit on certain covered spending | What does not count toward it? |
| Network | Contracted doctors and facilities | Is campus and local hospital included? |
Also inspect prescription, laboratory, mental-health, dental, vision, maternity, sports, pre-existing-condition and dependent terms.
Enrolment and waiver deadlines
A university may automatically charge insurance, require active enrolment or allow a waiver if another plan meets standards. Submit the waiver through the official portal and retain approval. Do not assume a receipt means the waiver was accepted.
- Confirm coverage start and end dates.
- Check whether summer and authorised practical training periods are covered.
- Add dependents separately where required.
- Know how to obtain the insurance card.
- Find the campus clinic and nearby in-network care.
Before leaving Nepal
Complete university immunisation, tuberculosis screening and health forms by the stated deadlines. Discuss ongoing conditions and travel with the treating clinician. Carry medication in original packaging, sufficient permitted supply and a prescription or medical summary where appropriate. Check restrictions rather than mailing medication later.
Use the USA pre-departure checklist and store records securely.
Campus clinic urgent care and emergency room
The campus health centre may provide routine services, while urgent care and emergency departments have different roles and costs. Learn the insurer’s nurse line, emergency number, claim process and referral rule. In an emergency, seek appropriate immediate help; insurance questions should not delay necessary care.
| Need | Possible starting point | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Routine illness or follow-up | Campus health centre or primary care | Appointment and insurance card |
| After-hours non-emergency | Plan nurse line or in-network urgent care | Location and transport |
| Emergency | Emergency services or emergency department | Call local emergency number |
| Mental-health support | Campus counselling or covered provider | Crisis and routine contacts |
Include health costs in USA planning
Add the insurance premium and likely out-of-pocket costs to the annual budget. A scholarship may exclude insurance. Do not rely on an on-campus job to cover an unknown medical bill. Review the USA cost guide and keep an emergency buffer.
Coverage can fail if process is ignored
Read whether a service requires a referral, prior authorisation or an in-network provider. Check emergency care away from campus, laboratory and imaging networks, ambulance, rehabilitation and prescription formularies. A benefit listed as covered may still involve a deductible, coinsurance, limit or medical-necessity review.
Ask how claims are submitted and appealed and what happens if coverage ends during a leave, transfer or graduation. Save plan documents for the relevant year because benefits can change. If a student has an ongoing condition, contact the plan and campus health service before arrival so continuity of care is arranged.

USA student health insurance FAQs
Do international students need health insurance in the USA?
Requirements vary by university and location. Many schools require or automatically enrol students in a student health plan. Follow the institution’s waiver and coverage rules.
Is travel insurance the same as USA student health insurance?
No. Travel disruption, travel health, medical evacuation and long-term student health coverage can cover different risks. Read the policy terms and dates.
What should a Nepali student compare in a health plan?
Compare premium, deductible, copay, coinsurance, network, prescription, mental-health, emergency, pre-existing-condition and dependent coverage and the annual out-of-pocket maximum.
Can a student waive the university insurance plan?
Some universities allow a waiver only when alternative coverage meets defined standards and the request is approved by the deadline. Do not cancel coverage before approval.
What health documents should be prepared before travel?
Follow the university’s immunisation, tuberculosis screening and health-form instructions and carry prescriptions and relevant medical records securely.
Can MKS Education recommend a specific insurance company?
MKS Education can help students read the university checklist but does not guarantee or endorse a specific insurer. Coverage decisions should use official plan documents and professional advice.
