Letter grades and grade points

EducationUSA’s glossary shows the common reference: A equals 4.0, B equals 3.0, C equals 2.0, D equals 1.0 and F equals 0.0. Universities may use plus and minus grades, pass or fail courses, repeated-course rules and different programme minimums.

Always use the registrar and programme handbook for the actual policy.

How a weighted GPA works

A typical calculation multiplies the grade points for each course by its credit hours, adds the quality points and divides by total GPA credits. For example, a four-credit course affects the GPA more than a one-credit course. Withdrawals, repeats and pass or fail courses may be treated differently.

Grades are built across the term

EducationUSA notes that quizzes, exams, papers, projects, attendance and participation can contribute to a grade. The syllabus normally states weights, deadlines, late-work rules, academic-integrity policy and office hours. A final exam may be only one component.

• Enter all deadlines in a calendar.
• Track current scores and remaining weight.
• Ask questions before the assignment is due.
• Use tutoring, writing and faculty office hours.
• Do not submit copied or unauthorised AI-generated work.

Admission evaluation is separate

For admission, submit the official transcript, marking scale and translations requested. A university may evaluate the record internally or ask for a credential evaluation. Do not self-convert marks unless the application explicitly requests a method.

Use the USA documents checklist and keep the original grading context. SAT, GRE or GMAT can provide additional evidence where considered but do not replace the transcript.

Act before a problem grows

Programmes may require a minimum cumulative or major GPA and may use warning, probation or dismissal procedures. Scholarship renewal can have a separate GPA condition. If performance drops, speak with the instructor and academic adviser early. International students should consult the DSO before any withdrawal, reduced course load or programme change.

Participation and integrity

Many courses expect discussion, group work, citation and independent analysis. Asking a question is not a sign of weakness. Learn the university’s definitions of plagiarism, collaboration and permitted AI assistance. A practice accepted in one course may be prohibited in another.

Registration choices affect progress

Balance required prerequisites, major courses and workload. A high-credit laboratory or writing course may require more time than the credit number suggests. Consult the adviser before repeating a course or changing it to pass or fail because the choice can affect prerequisites, scholarships, graduation and GPA.

Check whether the programme calculates a separate major GPA, science GPA or graduate GPA. Admission to a later programme may recalculate the transcript differently from the university’s cumulative GPA. Keep the official transcript and do not present a self-calculated number as institutional.
