UK Student Visa Decision Email Explained
A UKVI email may confirm success, attach a refusal notice, say only that a decision has been made, or request another action. Read the full message and any attached decision document. For successful new applications, current guidance uses an eVisa rather than a passport sticker.
Types of UKVI messages
| Message type | What it means | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Decision made notification | Processing has ended, but the short email may not contain the full outcome | Follow the official link or wait for the detailed notice |
| Successful decision | Permission has been granted | Access and check the eVisa before travel |
| Refusal decision | Application was refused under stated rules or evidence findings | Read reasons, deadline and review/appeal rights |
| Further evidence request | No final decision yet | Submit the named item through the specified channel by deadline |
| Interview invitation | UKVI needs a credibility assessment | Confirm attendance and prepare from the application |
| Delay notification | Case needs longer than the usual processing period | Read the reason and respond only if requested |
| IHS underpayment | A surcharge balance remains | Pay through the official route within the stated time |
A “decision made” email is not always the decision itself
Processing guidance says UKVI sends a letter or email when a decision is made. The notification may be separate from the detailed outcome or eVisa access. Check the UKVI account, attached PDF and any follow-up instruction. Do not infer success from passport return, email timing or a courier message.
Applicants in the same family or intake can receive decisions on different days. One person’s success does not determine another’s case.
How to recognise a successful decision
A successful message identifies the application and explains that permission has been granted or how to access digital status. Verify:
- Applicant name and application reference.
- Immigration route or status.
- Permission start and end dates.
- Instructions for UKVI account and eVisa access.
- Any travel-document or form-for-accompanying-an-eVisa instruction.
- Contact or error-reporting route.
Do not share the full decision email publicly. It can contain identity and application information.
eVisa after a successful Student application
UKVI’s 1 July 2026 update states that successful new applicants receive an eVisa and that visa vignette stickers are no longer issued for successful new applications from that date. An eVisa is a digital record of identity, immigration status and conditions.
- Use the decision instruction to create or sign in to a UKVI account.
- If you already have an account, do not create a duplicate.
- Link the account to the eVisa if it was not linked during setup.
- View the immigration status and conditions.
- Add or check the passport that will be used for travel.
- Generate a share code later where required to prove status.
Access to an eVisa and UKVI account is free. A third party charging to “activate” the decision is not part of the official process.
What to check on the eVisa
| Field | Check |
|---|---|
| Identity | Name, date of birth, nationality and photograph |
| Status | Correct Student permission |
| Dates | Permission start and end dates match the route and course |
| Conditions | Study, work and public-funds conditions |
| Travel document | Current passport is linked |
| Access | Applicant controls email, phone and sign-in method |
GOV.UK says applicants must check UKVI account and eVisa details before travel. If an error appears, report it through the official eVisa error service. That service can address wrong identity or immigration details, inability to view status and share-code problems.
Form for Accompanying an eVisa
The July 2026 update says some applicants may be issued a Form for Accompanying an eVisa (FAV). Where issued, it generally must be collected from the VAC and, together with the linked eVisa, enables travel. Follow the decision message; do not assume every Student receives one.
Passport return messages
Under the digital system, applicants normally do not wait for a physical vignette. If the VAC holds a passport, the centre will contact the applicant when it is ready for collection or return. GOV.UK says not to visit the VAC until contacted.
A passport collection or courier message is about document logistics, not a reliable statement of the immigration outcome.
How to read a refusal email
A refusal notice should identify the applicable route and explain the reasons. Read it in layers:
- Decision: confirm that the application was refused.
- Rule: note each Immigration Rule or suitability provision cited.
- Finding: identify the fact or evidence UKVI says was missing, unacceptable or not credible.
- Reasoning: record how UKVI connected the evidence to the rule.
- Rights: check administrative review or appeal information.
- Deadline: calculate from the date the decision was received.
Do not edit or paraphrase the letter before obtaining advice. Keep the original PDF and email headers.
Administrative review instructions
For an eligible outside-UK refusal, GOV.UK says the decision letter tells the applicant whether administrative review is available. The request must be made within 28 days of receiving the decision and currently costs £80.
Administrative review examines whether the decision contains a caseworking error. It is not a general second application. A new immigration application withdraws a pending administrative review. Current published processing can take 12 months or more, so compare review and reapplication carefully with authorised advice.
Further-evidence email
If the email asks for a document, the visa is not yet decided. Check:
- Exact document or information requested.
- Deadline and timezone.
- Submission address, portal or upload method.
- File format and size.
- Application reference to include.
Submit only accurate evidence through the specified route and save proof. If the request appears to come from UKVI but asks for an unusual payment or password, verify it independently.
Delay email
A delay message can arise from verification, additional evidence, interview, personal circumstances, high demand or a technical issue. It is not a refusal. Respond only when the message requests action and continue monitoring the account.
If the application exceeds the current published processing time and no explanation has been received, use the official UKVI contact route. The complaints form is not a tracking service.
Safe email checks
- Compare the GWF or UAN with your saved application.
- Check the sender carefully, but do not rely on the display name alone.
- Reach the UKVI account by typing the GOV.UK address or using a saved official link.
- Never provide a password, recovery code or card OTP by reply.
- Do not pay a “release fee” to receive a successful result.
- Keep screenshots, attachments and timestamps.
- Ask the university’s immigration team or an authorised adviser if uncertain.
Before booking a flight
GOV.UK says an applicant must not travel before approval and must check the eVisa and UKVI account details. Confirm that:
- The decision is successful.
- The eVisa is visible.
- The travel date is on or after permission starts.
- The correct passport is linked.
- Any required FAV has been collected.
- Name and status details are correct.
- Course and accommodation arrival instructions are understood.
Common misunderstandings
- “Your application has been processed” automatically means success.
- Passport return means approval.
- A successful email replaces the need to check the eVisa.
- Every applicant receives a vignette after July 2026.
- Every refusal has a full appeal right.
- Administrative review allows unlimited new evidence.
- A paid agent can change the decision email.
