Plagiarism and Academic Integrity in UK Universities 2026 Guide

Academic integrity means producing genuine work, acknowledging sources and following the assessment rules. Misconduct can damage marks, progression, professional standing and the value of the qualification.

Quick answer: Write the assessed work yourself, cite every source and borrowed idea as required, keep research notes, follow the university’s AI policy and ask before collaborating. Paying someone, copying, inventing sources or disguising AI output can be misconduct.

Forms of academic misconduct

Plagiarism: presenting words, ideas, data, images or code without proper acknowledgement.
Collusion: unauthorised collaboration on individual work.
Contract cheating: another person or service completes assessed work.
Fabrication: inventing data, references, interviews or evidence.
Self-plagiarism: reusing previous assessed work without permission or disclosure.

Referencing correctly

Use the style required by the department, such as Harvard, APA, OSCOLA or another system. Record full source details while researching. A reference list alone is not enough when in-text citation or quotation marks are required.

Changing a few words is not genuine paraphrasing. Read the source, understand the idea, write a new explanation for the assessment purpose and cite the source. Compare your wording with the original before submission.

Generative AI

Rules differ between universities, modules and assessments. Some tasks permit limited brainstorming or editing with disclosure; others prohibit AI completely. Group work versus collusion

A group assessment can allow shared output, but an individual assessment may allow only discussion or peer feedback. Ask the tutor what can be shared, and keep evidence of your contribution and version history.

Read the notice and procedure, preserve drafts and notes, meet the stated deadline and seek support from the students’ union or university adviser. Be honest. An allegation is handled under the institution’s own policy, which should explain evidence and appeal routes.
