Map where the student will live, study, work and travel and check each provider’s coverage map and local user experience. Rural campuses, basements, concrete residences and intercity routes can perform differently. Ask whether the plan uses 5G, LTE, reduced-speed data or Wi-Fi calling and whether the handset supports the Canadian bands.

Estimate monthly data from video classes, maps, messaging, calls to Nepal, banking and job searches. For home internet, compare advertised and typical speeds, upload performance, data limits, installation, modem, outage support and whether roommates share the account. Unlimited data may still have traffic-management or speed terms.

Keep a reliable way to receive DLI, bank, employer and IRCC messages. Confirm number portability, voicemail and international SMS. Do not use a phone number owned by an agent or temporary host for secure accounts because losing the number can block password recovery and expose personal information.

Prepaid service can limit credit checks and surprise debt but may have fewer promotions, expiration rules or separate add-ons. Postpaid plans bill after use and can include overage, roaming and a credit check. Compare the minimum monthly charge, contract term, deposit, cancellation and late-payment rules rather than relying on the sales summary.

A device-financing plan spreads handset cost over time and can create a balance due when cancelling or upgrading. Confirm ownership, return or final-payment conditions, damage rules and whether accepting a new device extends the commitment. Bringing an unlocked phone can lower obligations but requires compatibility and battery checks.

Request the permanent contract and critical information summary in an accessible format. Verify every discount, student eligibility, expiry date and price after promotion. The CRTC codes require clear information, but the customer should preserve the offer screenshot, order confirmation, chat and first bills in case the implementation differs.

The Wireless Code provides a trial period for contracts with early cancellation fees, subject to device condition and usage limits, and caps certain data and roaming overage unless the authorized account holder agrees to more. Review the current amounts and plan notifications rather than assuming an alert prevents every charge.

The Internet Code requires clear contracts and information on prices, promotions, outages, deposits and disconnection. It also provides remedies when the permanent contract differs from the offer and limits early cancellation fees under covered arrangements. Confirm whether the specific provider is covered and retain the cancellation reference.

Before travel to Nepal, compare roaming passes, daily charges, international eSIM or local SIM use and two-factor authentication needs. Turn off data roaming where appropriate and check voicemail and background-app charges. The roaming cap does not mean all international use is free or that the phone will remain connected after the cap.

Read every bill and compare the base price, promotion, device amount, tax, data, roaming, installation and credits with the contract. Contact the provider promptly, state the disputed amount and requested correction and keep the case number, representative name, date and transcript. Continue paying undisputed amounts where appropriate.

If the provider does not resolve the issue, use its escalation or complaint office and then the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services when eligible. The CCTS administers the CRTC codes but does not replace police or fraud reporting. Preserve the contract, bills, chats, cancellation confirmation and device-return tracking.
