Strong data reasoning separates calculation from the claim it supports

The arithmetic may be short, but the difficult step is deciding what the quantities, sample, model and result actually mean.

Use the official domain map. College Board describes Problem Solving and Data Analysis as quantitative reasoning with ratios, rates, proportional relationships and units, plus analysing one- and two-variable data. Its listed skills also include percentages, probability, conditional probability, inference, margin of error and evaluating statistical claims. Label the skill before solving so that practice review can distinguish content errors from reading or interpretation errors.

For ratios and rates, define the compared quantities in the order requested and keep units attached. A unit rate expresses one quantity per one unit of another. Proportional relationships have a constant ratio and can be written with a constant of proportionality, while a relationship with a nonzero starting value may be linear without being proportional. Convert units before substitution and check whether the final unit matches the question.

For percentages, identify the base quantity before applying a change. A percent increase or decrease is measured relative to the original value, and repeated changes use multiplication rather than simple addition. Distinguish percentage points from percent change. In multistep contexts such as tax, discount, concentration or growth, write each factor explicitly and apply it to the correct stage.

For one-variable data, connect center, spread, shape and possible outliers. The mean uses every value and can be sensitive to extremes; the median depends on order and can be more resistant. Interpret range, interquartile range and standard deviation according to what the question provides. A summary statistic should describe the actual distribution and units rather than becoming an isolated formula.

For two-variable data, read axes, units, direction, form and strength before interpreting a model. A line of best fit can estimate values within a reasonable range, while extrapolation beyond observed data needs caution. Residuals compare observed and predicted values. Association between variables does not by itself prove that changing one variable causes the other to change.

Probability questions require a clearly defined sample space. Conditional probability restricts attention to a stated subgroup, so the denominator changes. For inference, ask how the sample was selected, whether assignment was random, what population is represented and how margin of error affects precision. Random sampling supports generalisation to a population; random assignment supports cause-and-effect conclusions in a well-designed experiment.

MKS Education teaches Problem Solving and Data Analysis through physical, online and hybrid classes, recordings in every mode, iOS and Android practice, physical books, an eight-week guided course, six-month access and continued support. Students needing repetition may join multiple suitable classes without another class charge, subject to seats and schedules. MKS can teach, diagnose and review reasoning without guaranteeing an SAT score.

Diagnose first

Use a timed Bluebook practice result and a domain-level error log instead of choosing a plan from a guessed score.

Match the goal

Connect the test date, score decision and preparation schedule to the real university and scholarship timeline.

Verify claims

Use College Board and official university pages for changing rules, dates, fees, formats and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the decision into checks you can verify

Save the source URL and the date you checked it. A clear table is more reliable than memory or a verbal promise.

CheckWhy it mattersWhat to verify
RatioCompares two quantities in a stated order.Quantities order and simplification.
Unit rateExpresses one quantity per one unit of another.Numerator denominator and units.
ProportionRepresents equal ratios.Constant relationship and cross-check.
Percent changeMeasures change relative to the original value.Original base and multiplier.
Percentage pointsCompares two percentage values directly.Difference versus percent change.
Mean and medianDescribe center in different ways.Outliers shape and context.
SpreadDescribes variability.Range IQR or standard deviation.
Scatterplot and modelDescribe a two-variable relationship.Axes trend residual and prediction range.
ProbabilityMeasures favourable outcomes in a sample space.Equally likely cases and denominator.
Conditional probabilityRestricts the sample space to a subgroup.Condition becomes the denominator.
InferenceUses a sample to estimate a population feature.Sampling method and margin of error.
Statistical claimConnects study design to a justified conclusion.Association generalisation or causation.
MKS Education: MKS can classify errors by proportional reasoning, percent base, data representation, probability setup, inference or claim interpretation and assign targeted official questions.

What makes the MKS SAT learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable; the system supports Kathmandu and outside-Kathmandu learners.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured SAT practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official digital resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing more repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to the current schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Define quantities units population sample and the requested result.
  • Choose a proportion table graph statistic probability model or study-design rule.
  • Calculate with labels and retain enough precision until the final step.
  • Interpret the answer within the context and limit the claim to the evidence.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not drop units or reverse the order of a ratio.
  • Do not confuse percentage points with percent change.
  • Do not extrapolate a data model far beyond the observed range without caution.
  • Do not claim causation from association or generalise from a biased sample.
Current test context

Prepare for the digital SAT that students actually take

College Board states that the SAT contains a 64-minute Reading and Writing section and a 70-minute Math section. Each has two adaptive modules, with a 10-minute break between the sections.

Reading and Writing

  • 54 questions across two 32-minute modules.
  • Build information and ideas, craft and structure, expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Review why the correct answer is supported and why each close alternative fails.
  • Track both accuracy and time by domain before relying on full-test averages.

Math

  • 44 questions across two 35-minute modules.
  • Build Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, Geometry and Trigonometry.
  • Choose deliberately between mental work, algebra and the built-in graphing calculator.
  • Review conceptual, translation, calculator and careless-error patterns separately.

What is included in SAT Problem Solving and Data Analysis?

It includes ratios rates units percentages one- and two-variable data probability inference margin of error and evaluation of statistical claims.

How do I avoid mistakes in ratio and rate questions?

Write the quantities in the requested order, keep units attached, convert units before calculating and verify that the final unit answers the question.

What is the difference between percent change and percentage points?

Percent change compares a difference with the original value, while percentage points are the direct difference between two percentage values.

Can a scatterplot prove that one variable causes another?

No. Association alone does not establish causation. Study design, including random assignment in an experiment, determines whether a causal conclusion is justified.

Does MKS guarantee a higher data-analysis score?

No. MKS provides diagnosis teaching practice and review, but cannot guarantee a score or fixed improvement.
