USA SEVP-Certified School and Accreditation Check Guide for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A practical two-layer check for Nepali applicants: confirm that the exact school can enroll F-1 students and that the institution or programme has the recognition needed for the study goal.
SEVP certification and accreditation are not the same. A prospective F-1 student should find the exact school or campus in the Department of Homeland Security School Search, then separately check institutional and programme recognition through the U.S. Department of Education and the university’s official pages.
Important: A familiar name, agent brochure or social-media advertisement is not proof. Match the legal institution name, campus, programme, intake and Form I-20 issuer before paying a deposit.
Understand what each official check proves
SEVP certification allows a qualifying school to issue Form I-20 and enroll eligible F or M students. The official Study in the States School Search can be filtered by school, location, education type and visa category.
Accreditation is a separate review carried out by recognized non-governmental accrediting bodies. The U.S. Department of Education does not itself accredit universities, but it provides information about recognized agencies and a database of reported accredited institutions and programmes.
| Question | Official place to check | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Can this school enroll F-1 students? | Study in the States School Search | School name, campus, city and F-1 indicator |
| Is the institution accredited? | U.S. Department of Education and DAPIP | Institution, accreditor and current status |
| Does the programme need special recognition? | Programme and licensing authority pages | Programme-level accreditation or approval |
| Does the offer match the real school? | University admission portal and Form I-20 | Legal name, degree, campus and start date |
Match the offer, I-20 and campus record
Many institutions have several campuses, instructional sites or similarly named schools. Search the exact city and campus connected to the admission offer. Confirm that the programme is delivered at that location and that the school official issuing Form I-20 is part of the same institution.
If the search result is unclear, ask the university’s international office for its SEVP school code or written confirmation and compare it with the Form I-20. Do not rely on a screenshot supplied by an unrelated recruiter.
Check the outcome that matters after graduation
Institutional accreditation may not answer every career question. Nursing, engineering, counselling, teaching, law, architecture and other regulated paths can involve programme accreditation, state licensing or professional approval. A degree can be academically valid yet not satisfy a specific state licence or professional pathway.
Ask the department what graduates are eligible to do, whether the selected programme has required professional recognition, and how international credentials affect entry. For transfer plans, ask the receiving institution directly whether credits are likely to be accepted.
Pause before paying when evidence does not align
- The school or campus cannot be found in the official SEVP search.
- The recruiter refuses to identify the legal institution issuing Form I-20.
- The programme is described as accredited without naming the recognized accreditor.
- A guaranteed visa, job, transfer or licence is promised.
- Payment is requested to a personal account or an unrelated business.
- The admission letter, portal and Form I-20 show different names, campuses or dates.
Contact the university through the official domain shown on its website. Keep the offer, fee schedule, refund policy and correspondence in one evidence folder.
Verify tests only after the programme is real
Once the university and programme pass due diligence, confirm the admissions tests for the exact intake. SAT may support undergraduate admission or scholarship review. GRE can be relevant to graduate or doctoral programmes, while GMAT may be used for MBA and business pathways. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo English Test policies vary by institution.
A test score cannot repair an unrecognized programme or an invalid school choice. MKS Education therefore connects preparation with official programme verification and realistic application planning.
Prepare for USA admission with MKS Education
For undergraduate planning we emphasize SAT where it strengthens the application; for graduate, MBA and doctoral routes we map GRE or GMAT to the department policy. English preparation is matched to the university’s accepted test list. MKS Education provides structured SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test and TOEFL-focused preparation in Nepal. We connect test preparation with programme selection, application evidence and realistic deadlines.

SEVP certification and accreditation FAQs
Is an SEVP-certified school automatically accredited?
No. SEVP certification allows an eligible school to enroll F or M students and issue Form I-20, while accreditation is a separate quality-review system. Check both when they matter to your programme.
Where can a Nepali student verify SEVP certification?
Use the official Study in the States School Search and match the exact school or campus shown on the admission offer and Form I-20.
Where can I check U.S. college accreditation?
Use the U.S. Department of Education accreditation pages and DAPIP database, then verify any programme-specific accreditation required for the intended profession.
Can a non-SEVP-certified institution issue Form I-20 for F-1 study?
An institution must have the appropriate SEVP certification to issue Form I-20 and enroll students in F or M status. Confirm the exact school and campus before paying.
Does accreditation guarantee admission, visa approval or employment?
No. Accreditation is one due-diligence check. Admission, visa eligibility, transfer credit, licensure and employment are separate decisions.
Can MKS Education verify a university for me?
MKS Education can help students use official search tools and compare programme evidence, but the student must confirm the final institution, campus and requirements directly.
