Documents and facts to collect

The State Department’s DS-160 FAQ tells students to have the passport and Form I-20 available. The form may also request travel history, education and employment information. Build a private fact sheet from genuine records so names, dates and addresses remain consistent.

Application ID and session management

When a DS-160 is started, record the application ID and the security answer securely. The State Department says a partially completed application can be retrieved within the stated period and explains how to save it for longer use. Do not share the ID or security answer in public messages.

• Save after completing each page.
• Use the form buttons rather than the browser back button.
• Keep a private copy of the facts entered.
• Do not submit until the review is complete.

High-risk areas for student applicants

Check school, programme, SEVIS ID, intended arrival, funding, previous travel, education, work and any prior visa history. If a question is unclear, use the official help text or embassy guidance. Do not select “does not apply” merely to avoid explaining a real fact.

3. Check education and employment chronology.

DS-160 is one step

Do not hide a submitted error

The correct next step depends on whether the form was submitted and how the appointment system links the confirmation number. Use official DS-160 and embassy guidance rather than editing screenshots or giving a different answer at interview without explanation. Keep the new confirmation page if a new application is required.

Use help without losing ownership

A consultant may help explain a question or type what the applicant says, but the student must review every answer before electronic signature. Record third-party assistance where the form requires it. Never allow an agent to invent travel history, education, relatives, funding or social-media details, and never submit simply because an appointment slot looks urgent.

Keep the application ID, security answer and confirmation page private. Compare the saved details with the passport, Form I-20 and intended school before submission.
