USCIS describes practical training as employment directly related to the student’s major area of study. English-language training students are not eligible for practical training.

Use CPT correctly

Curriculum comes before employment

CPT must be an integral part of an established curriculum, such as required internship, cooperative education or another qualifying practicum. The DSO authorises the specific employer, dates and part-time or full-time basis on Form I-20. An offer letter alone does not authorise work.

Confirm eligibility with the DSO.
Register for the required curricular component where applicable.
Check employer, location and dates on the updated I-20.
Do not start early or continue after the end date.
Track full-time CPT because 12 months or more affects post-completion OPT eligibility.

Recommendation and USCIS filing

OPT can be pre-completion or post-completion and must be directly related to the major. The student asks the DSO for a SEVIS recommendation and then files the required application with USCIS within the permitted window. Employment can begin only when authorisation and the approved start date allow it.

Check STEM eligibility

A 24-month extension has extra conditions

USCIS states that qualifying students may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. The degree must have an eligible CIP code, the school and degree must satisfy current requirements, the employer must participate in E-Verify and the student and employer complete Form I-983. Employment and reporting rules are more detailed than regular OPT.

Do not choose a degree only because someone labels it “STEM.” Verify the programme’s I-20 CIP code and the current DHS STEM list.

OPT is not an admission guarantee

Admission, visa, practical training and employment are separate decisions. A university cannot guarantee a visa, OPT approval, STEM extension or job. Shortlist the programme for academic value and affordability first. Read the USA shortlisting guide and F-1 visa guide.

Protect status

Changes that require immediate guidance

Contact the DSO before transferring schools, changing programme level, dropping below full-time study, travelling during a pending application or changing practical-training employment. USCIS instructions state that transferring schools or changing educational level can terminate OPT authorisation. Keep copies of I-20s, EADs, applications and official messages.

Understand authorisation dates

An internship offer is not permission to work

Every training period has a defined authorised start, end and sometimes employer or location. A student must not start orientation, unpaid productive work or remote duties if those activities require employment authorisation that is not yet effective. Describe the real duties to the DSO so the school or USCIS can evaluate the relationship to the curriculum or major.

Keep pay records, offer letters, I-20s and EAD copies. If duties, employer, hours or location change, ask the DSO what reporting or new authorisation is required before the change. Volunteer work is not automatically outside immigration rules merely because it is unpaid.

CPT and OPT FAQs for Nepali students

What is the difference between CPT and OPT for F-1 students?

CPT is curricular training authorised by the DSO as an integral part of the curriculum. OPT is practical training directly related to the major and requires DSO recommendation plus USCIS authorisation.

Can an F-1 student start CPT before authorisation?

No. USCIS states the student must have the DSO endorsement on Form I-20 and must not start before the authorised CPT start date.

Does full-time CPT affect post-completion OPT?

USCIS states that one year or more of full-time CPT makes an F-1 student ineligible for post-completion OPT at the same educational level.

How long is regular post-completion OPT?

Eligible students may generally receive up to 12 months of OPT for an educational level, subject to USCIS approval and any prior OPT used at that level. Confirm current rules with the DSO and USCIS.

Who can qualify for a STEM OPT extension?

An eligible F-1 student with qualifying post-completion OPT, a qualifying STEM degree and an eligible employer may apply for a 24-month extension under current rules. Detailed conditions apply.
