USA University Transfer Process from Nepal 2026–2027

Plan an academic transfer from Nepal or a school transfer inside the United States while protecting credit, degree time, cost and F-1 status.

Fact-checked: 24 July 2026Transfer admission · Credit evaluation · SEVIS transferOfficial-source workflow
Quick answer

A U.S. transfer has two possible layers: the receiving university decides admission and academic credit, while an F-1 student already in the United States must also follow the SEVIS transfer process through designated school officials. Never assume that admission automatically transfers credits or immigration records.

Two decisions: Credit transfer is academic; SEVIS transfer is immigration-status administration. Complete both workflows when both apply.

Who is a transfer applicant?

Universities define transfer applicants differently, often based on postsecondary enrolment or credits completed after secondary school. Read the exact rule before choosing an application type. EducationUSA notes that a transfer applicant may need first-year requirements plus supplemental transfer information.

Prepare for course-by-course evaluation

The receiving institution decides whether a course is comparable and how it applies. A credit may transfer as a major requirement, general education, elective or not at all. Collect official transcripts and detailed syllabi showing learning outcomes, topics, contact hours, assessment and textbooks. Use certified translations if required.

A transfer application workflow

  1. Identify the exact degree and transfer-entry term.
  2. Check minimum credits, GPA, prerequisites and deadlines.
  3. Request every secondary and postsecondary record required.
  4. Prepare course descriptions and the required evaluation.
  5. Complete essays, recommendations and test evidence.
  6. Wait for both the admission decision and written credit evaluation.
  7. Compare remaining semesters, cost and scholarship before committing.

Use the USA application documents checklist and deadline guide.

Transfer F-1 records

Coordinate with both DSOs

An F-1 student changing U.S. schools should obtain acceptance from another SEVP-certified school and coordinate the SEVIS release with the current DSO and the transfer-in process with the new DSO. Confirm the release date, programme start, travel plan and new Form I-20. Do not rely on informal advice from classmates.

Before transferring, ask how the change affects employment or practical training. USCIS instructions warn that OPT authorisation can terminate when a student transfers schools or changes educational level. Get written, case-specific guidance before acting.

Compare the final offer

Credit is not the only decision

Calculate the credits accepted into the degree, remaining required courses, expected graduation date, total cost, scholarship, housing and campus support. A school accepting more raw credits may still require more major courses. For regulated fields, verify programme accreditation and licensure implications.

Avoid common mistakes

Transfer risks from Nepal

  • Applying as first-year when the university defines you as transfer.
  • Omitting a college attended because the credit was incomplete.
  • Assuming a credential evaluation guarantees university credit.
  • Paying a deposit before seeing remaining degree requirements.
  • Missing a SEVIS release or programme-start instruction.
  • Continuing work after authorisation is affected by transfer.
Build a transfer credit estimate

Calculate time before accepting

Create a worksheet listing every completed course, its credit value, the receiving university’s decision and the degree requirement it satisfies. Separate accepted credits from credits actually applied to the major. Then add the remaining general education, prerequisite, major, residency and capstone requirements.

Use the estimate to calculate semesters and cost. A scholarship offered for two years may not cover a third year caused by missing prerequisites. Ask whether the evaluation is preliminary or final and whether departments can revise it after receiving a syllabus. Do not withdraw from the current institution or trigger a SEVIS release until the new plan and official dates are confirmed.

FAQ

USA university transfer FAQs

Can a student transfer from a Nepali college to a USA university?

Yes, but the U.S. institution independently evaluates admission and transferable credit. Some courses may not transfer or may count only as electives.

Is a transfer applicant the same as a first-year applicant?

No. Definitions vary, but applicants with postsecondary study may need a transfer application, college transcripts and additional requirements. Always follow the receiving institution’s classification rule.

How many credits will a USA university accept from Nepal?

There is no universal number. The receiving institution evaluates course level, content, grades, accreditation and degree requirements and may require credential evaluation.

Can an F-1 student transfer between USA schools?

Yes if the student meets official transfer requirements and coordinates the SEVIS transfer with the current and new designated school officials. Academic admission and SEVIS transfer are separate.

Does transferring affect OPT?

A school or programme transfer can affect practical-training authorisation. Consult both DSOs before any change and do not work without current authorisation.

Can MKS Education help with a USA transfer application?

MKS Education can help organise transcripts, course descriptions, deadlines, test policies and the shortlist. Universities and DSOs control credit and SEVIS decisions.
