Choose the right course route

A course title is not enough. Confirm the award, regulator approval, intake, study mode, placement structure and whether completion makes you eligible to apply for professional registration. An academic degree that does not lead to registration can still be valuable, but it serves a different purpose.

Southampton’s BSc Midwifery is NMC approved and provides 2026/27 course information. Its programme documents state a minimum of 4,600 hours across three years with 50% in clinical practice; the exact modules and placement pattern should be checked for the intake.

Professional courses assess knowledge, conduct, communication and safe practice together. Keep evidence accurate and reflective. An attendance certificate or observation alone does not prove competence; explain what you learned, how feedback changed your approach and where your limits remain.

Entry requirements

UK universities assess Nepalese qualifications under their own policies. Do not convert a percentage or GPA into a UK classification yourself. Ask the university to confirm equivalence and check science prerequisites, English components, occupational health, character checks, interviews and placement eligibility.

The NMC says midwifery courses usually take at least three years, while a registered level-one adult nurse may undertake an approved reduced route. University entry, international eligibility and accelerated-route availability remain provider-specific.

Placements are assessed professional learning, not ordinary optional work experience. Confirm allocation, travel, attendance, shift patterns, health requirements, supervision, assessment and what happens if a placement is interrupted. International students should also verify Student visa conditions and any provider-specific placement rules.

Accreditation and professional recognition

All midwives working in the UK must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The NMC states that applicants must complete an NMC-approved midwifery programme and meet good-health and good-character requirements. Midwifery is also associated with a protected legal function around attendance in childbirth. Graduation and registration are separate steps.

Approval normally applies to a named programme, provider, study mode and period. It does not guarantee registration, employment, NHS funding, visa sponsorship or recognition in Nepal. Check the regulator directory and the university page for the exact course and intake.

Budget tuition, deposit, rent, transport, visa and health surcharge, travel, vaccinations, checks, uniform or equipment, professional fees and an emergency buffer. Do not rely on part-time work, a placement payment or a scholarship that has not been awarded.
