Study Accounting and Finance in the UK

Accounting and finance degrees examine how organisations record performance, allocate capital, manage risk and make financial decisions. Course titles can look similar while their mathematics, economics, law, analytics, professional recognition and placement structure differ substantially. Read the full curriculum and current professional-body listing before applying.

Quick answer: decide whether you want broad accounting and finance, accounting with professional-exam alignment, finance with stronger quantitative methods, or a management degree with an accounting pathway. Check mathematics prerequisites, compulsory modules, exemptions by graduation year, placement rules, international fees and realistic career requirements. A degree does not itself make you a chartered accountant or guarantee an investment role.

Accounting and finance are related but distinct

Area Typical questions Possible modules
Financial accounting How is performance reported under standards? Financial reporting, consolidation, audit
Management accounting How do managers plan and control resources? Costing, budgeting, performance management
Corporate finance How are investment and financing decisions made? Valuation, capital structure, risk
Markets and investments How are assets priced and portfolios managed? Investments, derivatives, banking
Tax and law How do legal and tax frameworks affect decisions? Business law, taxation, governance
Analytics How is financial data modelled and interpreted? Statistics, econometrics, software and data analysis

UCAS lists financial markets, taxation, banking and investment, corporate finance, accounting, management accounting, business policy and ethics among possible themes. Exact coverage depends on the course.

Choose the right course structure

Route Potential advantage What to verify
BSc Accounting and Finance Integrated reporting, management accounting and finance Balance of accounting, economics and quantitative finance
BSc Accounting Greater focus on professional accounting pathway Current exemptions and required modules
BSc Finance Deeper markets, valuation and quantitative analysis Mathematics prerequisites and programming
Management with Accounting and Finance Broader business curriculum with a specialism How much specialist credit is compulsory
MSc Accounting/Finance Advanced or conversion study depending on course Prior-subject and quantitative entry requirements

The University of Manchester’s 2026 BSc Management (Accounting and Finance), for example, starts with accounting, finance, management, work psychology, marketing, sociology and economics. A specialist accounting degree elsewhere may devote more credits to reporting, audit and tax. Compare credits, not only titles.

Professional accreditation and exemptions

Professional recognition can reduce some examinations, but it is course-, module-, graduation-year- and result-specific. ACCA says only programmes that complete its accreditation process qualify for exemptions and directs graduates to its exemption calculator. ICAEW calls exemptions credit for prior learning and says eligibility can depend on syllabus, learning outcomes, assessment and marks.

Claim on a course page Applicant check Do not assume
“Accredited by ACCA” Search the exact course and graduation year in the ACCA calculator Every ACCA exam is exempt
“ICAEW credit available” Check current CPL directory and module conditions Credit is automatic or free
Multiple professional bodies Map each body to your intended career and jurisdiction More logos always mean a better academic fit
Exemption subject to modules Confirm compulsory/elective choices and minimum marks Any pathway preserves the same exemptions

A degree and a professional qualification serve different purposes. Becoming chartered normally requires further exams, ethics, practical experience and membership conditions set by the body.

Entry requirements and mathematics

Requirements vary sharply. Some courses require advanced mathematics; others set a school-level mathematics minimum. UCAS stresses that universities set their own entry requirements. Bristol’s 2026 Accounting and Finance example requires Mathematics within its A-level offer, while Manchester’s course publishes its own preferred-subject rules. International applicants must use country-specific equivalence guidance.

Requirement What to confirm Preparation
Academic result Recognised qualification and exact grade equivalence Official transcript and certificate
Mathematics Required level, grade and accepted equivalent Algebra, functions, statistics and numerical reasoning as relevant
English Overall and component score, accepted alternatives Allow time for a valid result before the condition deadline
Postgraduate subject background Required accounting, finance, economics or quantitative credits Map transcript modules to the published prerequisite
Experience Whether an alternative experience route exists Provide accurate role and responsibility evidence

Assessment and practical learning

Expect a mix of examinations, calculations, written analysis, case reports, presentations and group work. Finance-heavy routes may add coding, data terminals or econometrics. Accounting routes may use standards, audit cases or tax rules. Check whether software access, certification or equipment creates extra cost.

  • Look for current module descriptions and assessment percentages.
  • Ask whether Bloomberg, accounting software or data platforms are taught or only available.
  • Confirm that optional modules actually run for your cohort.
  • Understand placement selection, employer responsibility and fallback route.
  • Check whether professional exemptions require specific modules and marks.

Placement and career planning

Target area Relevant evidence Additional pathway
Audit and assurance Reporting, audit, ethics and attention to evidence Professional training contract and exams
Management accounting Cost, budgeting and business partnering Relevant professional qualification
Corporate finance Valuation, modelling and commercial analysis Internship or transaction exposure where available
Investment analysis Quantitative finance, markets and research Competitive employer selection and possible further credentials
Risk or analytics Statistics, data tools and control thinking Sector-specific regulation and software

Professional bodies, employers and regulators define eligibility. International students must also consider work permission and sponsorship. A placement year is not guaranteed unless the university explicitly says so, and even then the employer usually makes the final selection.

Cost planning

Budget tuition for every year, later-year increase policy, deposit, rent, transport, visa and health surcharge, travel, laptop, software, professional-exemption fees and exam costs. Do not treat the Student visa financial requirement as a complete budget or assume part-time earnings will cover tuition.

Cost Official source Planning risk
Tuition Entry-year course fee page Ignoring annual increases
Professional credits Professional body’s current fee and exemption page Assuming exemptions are free
Placement year University fee and placement policy Assuming paid work or full fee waiver
Living costs University city estimate plus personal budget Using a national average for expensive housing
Visa costs Current GOV.UK pages Relying on an older blog figure
