Australia Superannuation Guide for Nepali Students 2027

A practical guide to employer super contributions, choosing and monitoring a fund, checking missing payments and understanding the DASP departure pathway.

Fact-checked: 25 July 2026 Official-source workflow Budget and compliance first
Important: Super rules, contribution timing, eligibility, tax and DASP withholding can change. Check your actual employment and visa circumstances with the ATO, your fund and a licensed professional when advice is required.
Understand super

Separate employer super from wages and visa work rights

Super is a retirement-savings system, not an extra cash amount normally paid into your everyday bank account.

An employer may need to pay super guarantee contributions for an eligible employee even when the employee is a temporary resident or international student. The contribution is calculated under super law and paid to a complying super fund. It should not be confused with income tax withheld, the hourly rate shown in a job advertisement or the cash deposited into your bank account. Your employment type, ordinary time earnings and other facts affect the calculation.

The ATO states that the super guarantee rate has been 12% since 1 July 2025. That percentage is applied under the current rules; it does not mean every amount on a payslip attracts super in exactly the same way. Super also does not create permission to work. Check your Student visa conditions through VEVO, track combined work hours and use Fair Work guidance to verify wages and employment status separately.

Compare a fund and give accurate details through payroll

A fund should be selected from verified information rather than an employer logo, social-media promotion or friend’s return claim.

Eligible workers can often choose a complying super fund. Compare administration and investment fees, insurance settings, investment options, service, digital access and the ease of managing the account if you later leave Australia. Investment performance can rise or fall and past returns do not guarantee future results. Use the ATO YourSuper comparison tool and Moneysmart education, then read the fund’s product and membership information before deciding.

Provide the fund name, unique superannuation identifier, member number and requested personal information through the employer’s authorised choice process. Make sure your legal name, date of birth, contact details and Tax File Number record are consistent where you choose to provide a TFN. Never send a TFN, passport or super login through an unverified recruiter message. If you do not make a valid choice, payroll may need to follow stapled-fund or default-fund rules.

Reconcile payslips with the actual super account

A super amount printed on a payslip is useful evidence but should be matched to contributions received by the fund.

Keep every payslip and check the employer name, pay period, ordinary hours and super information. Log in through the super fund’s official site or app and review when contributions arrive, recognising that payroll reporting and fund receipt may not appear on the same day. Keep the employment contract, fund-choice record, payslips and member statements together. Multiple short jobs can create multiple accounts and duplicate fees, so first identify every account before considering consolidation.

If a contribution appears missing, confirm the correct fund and member number with payroll and ask the employer in writing. Allow for the current legal payment schedule, then use the ATO unpaid-super guidance if the issue remains. Do not move or consolidate accounts without checking insurance, fees, investment implications and whether a claim or contribution is pending. A registered tax agent or licensed financial adviser may be appropriate for individual circumstances.

Understand DASP eligibility before closing accounts

Temporary residents usually cannot withdraw super merely because study ends or a job changes.

The ATO’s Departing Australia Superannuation Payment pathway is for eligible temporary residents who accumulated super while working in Australia, have departed and hold a visa that has expired or been cancelled, subject to the current exclusions and conditions. The payment is subject to withholding tax. Confirm eligibility on the ATO website rather than assuming the full displayed balance will be paid or treating super as part of the return-flight budget.

Before departure, identify each fund, update personal and overseas contact details, retain member numbers and ensure employers have made final contributions. The ATO online DASP system asks for identity, passport and fund information. Do not close the Australian bank account too early if it may be needed for final wages, tax or other legitimate payments. If super is later transferred to the ATO, follow the stated ATO-held-super process.

Do international students receive superannuation in Australia?

Eligible employees can receive compulsory employer super contributions even when they are temporary residents. The exact entitlement depends on current super rules and the working arrangement.

Is superannuation included in my take-home pay?

No. Employer super is generally paid to a super fund and is separate from the net wage deposited into your bank account.

Can I choose my own super fund?

Many eligible employees can choose a complying fund, but stapled-fund, default-fund and workplace rules may apply. Use the official choice process.

Can I withdraw super while studying in Australia?

Changing jobs or finishing a semester does not normally allow withdrawal. Eligible temporary residents generally use the DASP process only after departing and meeting visa-status conditions.

Can MKS Education recommend a specific investment fund?

MKS provides education-planning support, not licensed financial advice. Compare official information and use a qualified adviser for personal recommendations.
