Prepare identity, enrolment and Australian address evidence

Study Australia advises international students to approach a bank and identify themselves as international students.

A bank may request a passport, electronic Confirmation of Enrolment and proof of an Australian address, with exact requirements depending on the institution and when the account is opened. Use the bank’s official website, branch or verified app. Ensure the account name matches your identity and understand how the bank will contact you. Do not allow a friend, agent or employer to control the login or card.

Most students need a transaction or everyday account to receive wages, pay rent and manage bills. A separate savings account can make tuition or emergency funds harder to spend accidentally. Compare account-keeping, ATM, international transaction, overdraft and transfer fees along with app security, branch access and card replacement. A “student” label does not guarantee the lowest total cost.

Protect the account, card and digital identity

Convenient mobile banking also creates a high-value target for scams.

Use a unique password, enable the strongest available authentication and protect the email and phone number connected to the account. Turn on transaction and low-balance alerts. Lock a missing card immediately through the verified bank channel and report unknown transactions. Never give a PIN, password, full card details or one-time code to a caller or message sender, even if they claim to be the bank, police, provider or tax office.

Avoid banking on shared devices and be cautious with public Wi-Fi. Type the official address or use the installed verified app instead of opening unexpected login links. Review statements regularly and reconcile tuition, rent, wages and transfers. If a payment request changes bank details, stop and confirm with the organisation through a known independent contact route before sending money.

Preserve the source-to-payment evidence trail

Education funding should move through lawful, traceable channels that match the declared financial story.

Before sending money from Nepal, confirm the current Nepal foreign-exchange documentation and authorised-bank or remittance process. The student and sponsor should retain the source account statement, income or loan evidence, foreign-exchange approval or purpose documents, transfer receipt, exchange rate, fee record and the Australian receiving record. For tuition, use payment instructions verified against the education provider’s official portal or invoice.

Compare the total delivered amount, not only the headline exchange rate. A provider can add transfer, intermediary, receiving or card fees, and the exchange rate may include a margin. Test small transfers only when appropriate and authorised; do not split payments to hide the purpose or source. Never use an unknown person’s account or informal settlement arrangement to make the record appear different.

Separate spending, tuition and emergency money

Simple account rules can prevent missed tuition, rent and tax obligations.

Create labelled savings goals or separate suitable accounts for tuition, monthly living and emergency funds. Schedule bills only after checking the income and tuition calendar, and keep enough balance for direct debits. Review account fees and features annually because products change. If sharing expenses with a partner or housemates, understand that a joint account gives other holders access and may create risk; written cost-sharing can be safer for some arrangements.

Give employers only the account details required for payroll through a secure channel and compare deposits with payslips. Provide a TFN to the bank through its authenticated process when appropriate, not in open email. Before leaving Australia, wait for final wages, bond, tax refunds and eligible super payments before closing the account, then update addresses and secure any continuing online access.

Build one realistic study, budget and English-preparation plan

MKS Education helps Nepali students connect course selection, admission evidence, visa preparation and practical settlement planning. Our counsellors near Shankerdev Campus can review your academic history, offer, CoE, budget assumptions and document timeline, then identify the points that still need written confirmation from the provider or an Australian authority.

If English evidence is part of your pathway, MKS provides structured IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and Duolingo preparation. You can also practise through the MKS IELTS web app. Test acceptance and score requirements remain course-, provider- and visa-specific, so verify the current rule before booking a test.

Admission and visa decisions remain with the education provider and Australian authorities. MKS does not promise admission, employment, a scholarship, permanent residence or a visa.

What documents may an international student need to open an Australian bank account?

Study Australia lists an eCoE, passport and proof of Australian address, while each bank may have additional current identity requirements.

Do I need a TFN before opening a bank account?

Study Australia says a TFN is not required to open the account, but providing it through the bank’s secure process can affect tax withheld on interest.

Which Australian bank is best for Nepali students?

There is no universal best bank. Compare current fees, ATM access, international charges, app security, branches and account conditions.

What evidence should I keep when transferring education funds from Nepal?

Keep source statements, income or loan evidence, authorised transfer records, exchange-rate and fee details, receiving statements and provider receipts.

Can MKS Education receive or hold my tuition money?

Students should pay only through the education provider’s verified authorised route. MKS can help review instructions but should not replace the official payment recipient.
