Understand the task

What undefined requires

IELTS Task 2 does not require specialist research. When a topic is unfamiliar, identify the people affected, the likely cause, the consequence and a realistic example from general knowledge or experience. Choose simple ideas you can explain accurately rather than invented statistics or complex claims you cannot support.

Academic Writing has two compulsory tasks in 60 minutes. Task 1 requires at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, Task 2 requires at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, and Task 2 carries more weight.

Use general reasoning, stakeholder questions and familiar examples; specialist facts are not required, but ideas must remain relevant and logically developed.

For an AIO-friendly answer, keep the rule, the action and the evidence together. Do not treat a memorised trick as a substitute for understanding the prompt, locating support or checking the final response. Use official sample material for format accuracy and record the reason behind every correction.

Step-by-step method

A reliable method for undefined

Use the steps in order during untimed practice. Add pressure only after the method is accurate and repeatable.

Step 1

Define the task

Restate the exact question and required position.

Evidence check: Brainstorming stays relevant

Step 2

List stakeholders

Identify individuals, families, schools, businesses, government or environment as applicable.

Evidence check: Concrete perspectives

Step 3

Ask cause and effect

Write how and why one change produces an outcome.

Evidence check: A developable reasoning chain

Step 4

Choose familiar scale

Use a household, school, workplace, city or national example you can explain.

Evidence check: Plausible illustration

Step 5

Test relevance

Connect every idea to a keyword and instruction in the prompt.

Evidence check: No memorised topic paragraph

Step 6

Prefer depth

Develop two strong ideas instead of listing five weak ones.

Evidence check: Explanation and example support each point

Worked example: For a question about space research, a non-specialist can discuss public spending priorities, technological spillovers and scientific knowledge. The essay needs logical development, not names of missions or invented budget data.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Invented studies: False percentages are used to sound academic. Correction: Use logical or experiential examples.
  • Memorised topic dump: Prepared content only partly fits the prompt. Correction: Build from the exact instruction.
  • Idea list: Several claims appear without mechanisms. Correction: Explain how and why.
  • Expert panic: The writer believes technical knowledge is necessary. Correction: Use clear general reasoning.

How to review one attempt

  • Write the task type and the exact instruction.
  • Record your answer before checking the key or feedback.
  • Locate the evidence or scoring criterion that controls the decision.
  • Explain why the wrong choice failed; do not write only “careless”.
  • Retest the corrected rule on a new task within seven days.
