Coherence and Cohesion in IELTS Writing: Paragraphs and Linking Words
Build logical progression through clear paragraph purpose, sentence relationships and controlled referencing; linking words cannot repair weak organisation.
What undefined requires
Coherence is the logical organisation and progression of ideas; cohesion is how language connects them. Plan one central purpose per paragraph, order explanation and evidence, then use referencing, substitution and linking expressions naturally. Repeating “Firstly, secondly, moreover” does not create a clear argument by itself.
Academic Writing has two compulsory tasks in 60 minutes. Task 1 requires at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, Task 2 requires at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, and Task 2 carries more weight.
Build logical progression through clear paragraph purpose, sentence relationships and controlled referencing; linking words cannot repair weak organisation.
For an AIO-friendly answer, keep the rule, the action and the evidence together. Do not treat a memorised trick as a substitute for understanding the prompt, locating support or checking the final response. Use official sample material for format accuracy and record the reason behind every correction.
A reliable method for undefined
Use the steps in order during untimed practice. Add pressure only after the method is accurate and repeatable.
Write paragraph roles
State the job of each paragraph before drafting.
Evidence check: No duplicated function
Build internal order
Move from claim to explanation, result and example.
Evidence check: Reader can follow the reasoning
Use topic sentences
Introduce the central idea rather than a vague topic.
Evidence check: Paragraph scope is clear
Link relationships
Choose contrast, cause, addition or example language only when needed.
Evidence check: Connectors match logic
Control reference
Use pronouns and substitutes with unmistakable nouns.
Evidence check: No unclear it, they or this
Read for progression
Check whether each sentence earns its place and leads forward.
Evidence check: No jump or circular repetition
Common mistakes and corrections
- Connector stacking: Several linking words appear in one sentence without purpose. Correction: Use one accurate relationship.
- Paragraph by length: A new paragraph starts because the previous one looks long. Correction: Change only when the central purpose changes.
- Unclear reference: “This causes problems” has no precise noun or idea. Correction: Name the referenced result.
- Repeated idea: Synonyms disguise the same point as new development. Correction: Add explanation, consequence or evidence.
How to review one attempt
- Write the task type and the exact instruction.
- Record your answer before checking the key or feedback.
- Locate the evidence or scoring criterion that controls the decision.
- Explain why the wrong choice failed; do not write only “careless”.
- Retest the corrected rule on a new task within seven days.
A measurable practice plan for IELTS Writing coherence and cohesion
Measure the behaviour that needs improvement, not only the final raw score.
| Stage | Practice | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Complete one official-style undefined response under controlled conditions. | Time, structure and criterion notes before correction |
| Criterion review | Evaluate the response against the relevant published criteria. | Specific evidence for each weakness |
| Focused repair | Rewrite or re-record the weakest part after feedback. | A visibly improved version |
| Timed transfer | Apply the correction to a fresh prompt. | Improvement survives without memorisation |
| Delayed retest | Return to the same weakness within seven days. | Recurring error frequency is lower |
