What undefined requires

For line and bar graphs, paraphrase the task, write a clear overview of the main patterns, then group and compare selected data in body paragraphs. Do not report every number. Use accurate tense, units and comparative language, and make sure the overview contains the most important trends or differences.

Academic Writing has two compulsory tasks in 60 minutes. Task 1 requires at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, Task 2 requires at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, and Task 2 carries more weight.

Do not treat a memorised trick as a substitute for understanding the prompt, locating support or checking the final response. Use the steps in order during untimed practice. Add pressure only after the method is accurate and repeatable.

Read axes and units

Identify categories, time period, measurement and whether values are actual or projected.

Group logically

Combine similar series or periods rather than following the legend mechanically.

Worked example: If three countries rise while one remains stable, the overview should foreground that contrast. Body paragraphs can group the rising series and then describe the stable exception with selected start, end and peak figures.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Number list: Every value is reported with no selection or comparison. Correction: Group data around meaningful patterns.
  • Missing overview: The response lacks a summary of main features. Correction: Write the overview before detailed body paragraphs.
  • Invented explanation: Reasons not shown in the visual are added. Correction: Describe data only.
  • Tense mismatch: Past figures are described in the present or projections as facts. Correction: Use the time labels to control tense.

How to review one attempt

  • Write the task type and the exact instruction.
  • Record your answer before checking the key or feedback.
  • Locate the evidence or scoring criterion that controls the decision.
  • Explain why the wrong choice failed; do not write only “careless”.
  • Retest the corrected rule on a new task within seven days.
