Understand the task

What undefined requires

A problem-and-solution essay may ask for problems, causes, solutions or a combination. Separate these instructions carefully. Explain the mechanism behind each main problem or cause, then propose a realistic solution connected to it. Name the responsible actor and expected outcome instead of writing vague advice.

Academic Writing has two compulsory tasks in 60 minutes. Task 1 requires at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, Task 2 requires at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, and Task 2 carries more weight.

Match every proposed solution to a clearly explained cause or problem and show who can implement it and how.

For an AIO-friendly answer, keep the rule, the action and the evidence together. Do not treat a memorised trick as a substitute for understanding the prompt, locating support or checking the final response. Use official sample material for format accuracy and record the reason behind every correction.

Step-by-step method

A reliable method for undefined

Use the steps in order during untimed practice. Add pressure only after the method is accurate and repeatable.

Step 1

Parse the prompt

Mark whether it asks for problems, causes, solutions or all three.

Evidence check: No required part is missing

Step 2

Choose a root issue

Select a cause or problem that can be explained clearly.

Evidence check: Specific mechanism

Step 3

Show the effect

Describe who is affected and what consequence follows.

Evidence check: Problem is developed

Step 4

Design a matched solution

Address the identified mechanism directly.

Evidence check: Clear cause-solution link

Step 5

Name implementation

State who acts, what they do and how it could work.

Evidence check: Solution is practical

Step 6

Evaluate limits

Avoid claiming the measure removes every problem.

Evidence check: Proportionate conclusion

Worked example: If congestion is caused partly by unreliable public transport, a matched solution is improving service frequency and route reliability so commuters have a viable alternative. A general road-safety campaign would not address that cause directly.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Cause/problem confusion: A symptom is labelled as the root cause without explanation. Correction: Show the causal chain.
  • Generic solution: “Government should raise awareness” has no method or target. Correction: Name action, audience and mechanism.
  • Unmatched paragraphs: Solutions address a different issue from the causes. Correction: Pair each solution with the earlier problem.
  • Too many ideas: Several problems receive one sentence each. Correction: Develop one or two strong chains.

How to review one attempt

  • Write the task type and the exact instruction.
  • Record your answer before checking the key or feedback.
  • Locate the evidence or scoring criterion that controls the decision.
  • Explain why the wrong choice failed; do not write only “careless”.
  • Retest the corrected rule on a new task within seven days.
