A useful method produces evidence: fewer repeated errors on a fresh task.
Understand the task

What undefined requires

An opinion essay asks how far you agree or disagree. State a clear position in the introduction, organise body paragraphs around distinct reasons and explain how each reason supports that position. Relevant examples can come from knowledge or experience; do not invent research or memorise a generic essay.

Academic Writing has two compulsory tasks in 60 minutes. Task 1 requires at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, Task 2 requires at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, and Task 2 carries more weight.

Answer the exact degree of agreement, state a consistent position and develop each reason with explanation and relevant support.

For an AIO-friendly answer, keep the rule, the action and the evidence together. Do not treat a memorised trick as a substitute for understanding the prompt, locating support or checking the final response. Use official sample material for format accuracy and record the reason behind every correction.

Step-by-step method

A reliable method for undefined

Use the steps in order during untimed practice. Add pressure only after the method is accurate and repeatable.

Step 1

Read the degree

Identify whether the prompt asks agree/disagree or to what extent.

Evidence check: Position answers the exact wording

Step 2

Choose a defensible position

Decide full, partial or balanced agreement based on ideas you can develop.

Evidence check: No contradiction across paragraphs

Step 3

Write the thesis

State the position and central reasons concisely.

Evidence check: Reader can predict the argument

Step 4

Build reason paragraphs

Use one central idea, explanation, consequence and relevant example.

Evidence check: Each paragraph advances the position

Step 5

Handle qualification

Acknowledge limits only when they sharpen the stated extent.

Evidence check: Nuance does not erase the opinion

Step 6

Check task response

Verify relevance, development and a clear maintained position.

Evidence check: Every paragraph answers the prompt

Worked example: For a prompt asking whether universities should require community service, a thesis might partly agree because service builds civic experience but oppose a rigid requirement that ignores work and caring responsibilities. Each body paragraph must develop one side of that exact extent.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Position hidden: The introduction discusses the topic but never answers it. Correction: State the degree of agreement directly.
  • Two undeveloped reasons: A paragraph lists ideas without explaining them. Correction: Develop fewer ideas more fully.
  • Memorised opening: Generic claims do not fit the exact statement. Correction: Paraphrase the prompt and write a specific thesis.
  • Invented statistics: Unsupported numbers are used as evidence. Correction: Use logical examples from knowledge or experience.

How to review one attempt

  • Write the task type and the exact instruction.
  • Record your answer before checking the key or feedback.
  • Locate the evidence or scoring criterion that controls the decision.
  • Explain why the wrong choice failed; do not write only “careless”.
  • Retest the corrected rule on a new task within seven days.
