Understand what OSHC does

Overseas Student Health Cover helps overseas students and their dependants meet some costs of unplanned medical and hospital care in Australia. Most Student visa holders must maintain adequate insurance for the whole required stay. OSHC is not the same as Medicare and does not remove every gap payment.

Set the correct start and end dates

Home Affairs says applicants outside Australia need cover from the day they and their family arrive, not the course commencement date. A student travelling early must bring the policy start forward. The OSHC expiry date can affect the Student visa grant period, including possible post-course time.

Do not create an uninsured gap when changing provider, extending studies, deferring, adding a family member or moving to another visa class.

Match cover to the family

The 2025 Australian Government fact sheet describes Single, Couple, Single-Parent and Family policies. A student should not buy Single cover when an accompanying partner or child must also be insured.

Know what basic OSHC commonly includes

Government guidance says compulsory minimum OSHC usually assists with GP visits, specialist services, some hospital treatment, surgery, ambulance services and limited pharmaceuticals. The exact benefit can be tied to the Medicare Benefits Schedule rather than the provider’s full charge.

ServiceBasic OSHC positionPossible student cost
GP consultationEligible benefit under policyGap above benefit
Specialist consultationEligible benefit under policyReferral and gap may apply
Hospital treatmentCovered subject to policy rulesExcess, exclusions or private charges
AmbulanceIncluded within required OSHC benefitsCheck emergency rules
Prescription medicinesLimited pharmaceutical benefitCosts above caps
SurgeryEligible hospital/medical benefitsPolicy restrictions and gaps

Always read the insurer’s current product information. A service being medically useful does not automatically make it fully covered.

Plan for services outside basic cover

Standard OSHC generally does not cover dental, optical or physiotherapy as general treatment. Students who need these services may compare extras cover or separate insurance. Travel insurance can address different risks but does not replace required OSHC.

Use a benefit checklist, not price alone

Only approved insurers can offer compliant OSHC. The current government list includes ahm OSHC, Allianz Care Australia, Bupa Australia, CBHS International Health, Medibank and nib OSHC. Lists and products can change, so confirm on the official government comparison page.

A provider may recommend an insurer, but students can compare approved options. If switching, coordinate dates so the old policy ends only when the new one begins.

Check conditions before assuming immediate cover

Policies can apply waiting periods, restrictions and exclusions. A pre-existing condition, pregnancy-related service or treatment planned before arrival may have special rules. Ask the insurer in writing before purchase rather than relying on a general sales summary.

Verify the certificate details

The insurance certificate may be used in the visa process. Names, dates and family composition should therefore match the passport and application record.

Prepare for a medical visit

Learn the insurer’s provider network, emergency process, claim route and contact details before illness occurs. Ask a clinic whether it direct-bills the insurer and what gap remains.

Avoid arrears and gaps

Government guidance warns that a student who falls behind on payments may continue the policy after catching up but may be unable to claim for services received while in arrears. Treat renewal notices as visa-compliance alerts.

Keep an evidence trail

For every claim, retain the invoice, receipt, referral, prescription, hospital document, claim form and insurer decision. If a benefit appears wrong, contact the insurer first and request the policy basis in writing. The Commonwealth Ombudsman may provide further advice on eligible private health insurance complaints.

OSHC FAQs for Nepali students

Is OSHC compulsory for Nepali students applying for an Australian Student visa?

Yes. Most Student visa applicants and accompanying family members must hold and maintain Overseas Student Health Cover from an approved Australian insurer for the required period, unless a specific exception applies.

When should OSHC start for a student travelling from Nepal?

For applicants outside Australia, Home Affairs says cover must start on the day the student and family arrive, not merely on the course start date. Do not enter Australia before the policy begins.

How long should OSHC continue?

OSHC must cover the required stay in Australia. Home Affairs considers the OSHC expiry date when determining the Student visa grant period, so coverage should include the relevant course and post-course visa period.

Does basic OSHC cover dental, optical and physiotherapy?

No. Government guidance says standard OSHC does not cover general treatment such as dental, optical or physiotherapy. Students may compare extras cover or separate insurance for those services.

Does OSHC cover medicines?

OSHC includes limited pharmaceutical benefits. Current government guidance notes benefit limits and warns that students may face significant out-of-pocket costs for expensive medicines. Check the live policy schedule before choosing.

Can a university require students to buy its recommended OSHC provider?

A provider may arrange or recommend OSHC, but the 2025 government fact sheet says students can compare approved insurers, choose their own insurer and change insurers during study, provided there is no coverage gap.

What policy is needed when a spouse or child accompanies the student?

The policy must match the people included. Depending on the family arrangement, the student may need Couple, Single-Parent or Family OSHC rather than Single cover. Update the insurer if the family situation changes.

Can MKS Education guarantee an OSHC claim or Student visa?

No. Insurers decide benefits and claims, while Home Affairs decides visas. MKS Education can help Nepali students organise the study plan, documents and test preparation, but cannot guarantee insurance reimbursement, admission or a visa.
