Confirm the dependent relationship first

F-2 is a nonimmigrant student-dependent classification, not the immigrant family-preference “F2” category. Use the correct terminology in every form and interview. Ask the school DSO to add the dependent and check that names, dates of birth, relationship and passport details are accurate.

Keep the family story and student record consistent

The Department of State says dependents applying for F-2 visas need their own Forms I-20 and must provide a copy of the principal student’s F-1 visa plus proof of relationship. The consular officer may also examine the family’s temporary purpose, financial capacity and intention to depart after the authorized stay.

• Dependent passport and DS-160 confirmation.
• Individual dependent Form I-20.
• Marriage certificate or birth certificate, with acceptable translation where required.
• Principal student’s passport, F-1 visa, Form I-20 and admission or enrollment evidence.
• Funding evidence covering tuition plus dependent living, insurance and travel costs.
• Interview appointment and embassy-specific documents.

Budget for the family without F-2 employment

Because F-2 dependents cannot work, the budget should not rely on a spouse finding employment after arrival. Ask the university for the dependent amount it expects before issuing Forms I-20. Then add housing size, health insurance, childcare or school needs, local transport, travel and emergency reserves.

Know the limits before enrolling or accepting activity

F-2 dependents are not authorized to work. This applies even when the role is remote, informal or paid outside the United States. Do not treat volunteering that replaces a paid position as a safe substitute for employment advice.

Current rules can permit an F-2 spouse or child to study part time at an SEVP-certified school, while full-time postsecondary study generally requires changing to F-1 or M-1 status before beginning the full course. Children may attend elementary or secondary school under the applicable rules. Confirm the exact course load and timing with the DSO and the new school.

Coordinate every dependent record with the principal student

A dependent may apply with the F-1 student or later, but the record must show the continuing qualifying relationship and valid principal status. Hand-carry the dependent Form I-20, passport, visa, relationship evidence and copies of the principal student’s documents when traveling.

Contact the DSO before the principal transfers, changes degree level, completes study, begins OPT, extends status or travels for a long period. A child approaching age 21 needs early planning because ordinary F-2 child eligibility ends at 21.
