USA On-Campus Jobs for F-1 Students from Nepal 2026–2027
Understand eligible campus work, the 20-hour limit, DSO coordination, hiring documents and why a job should not replace the study funding plan.
An eligible F-1 student may take qualifying on-campus employment, generally up to 20 hours per week while school is in session. The work must meet official conditions and university procedures. Confirm with the DSO before accepting or starting any job.
No job guarantee: Admission, visa issuance and campus employment are separate decisions. Never choose an unaffordable university because someone promises a job.
What counts as on-campus employment
USCIS says on-campus work may be performed for the school or for an independent company that serves students on campus, such as a bookstore or cafeteria operator. Some educationally affiliated off-campus locations may qualify only under specific conditions. A nearby private business is not automatically on-campus work.
| Possible role | Check | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| University office or library | Student-employment eligibility and duties | Every department is hiring |
| Dining or bookstore contractor | Company serves campus students and role qualifies | Any contractor on campus is eligible |
| Research or lab assistant | Department appointment and student status | Academic interest alone authorises work |
| Affiliated off-campus site | Educational affiliation and integral programme connection | Physical proximity makes it on-campus |
Hours and academic priority
USCIS states that F-1 on-campus employment is generally limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session and may be full-time during annual vacation or other official breaks when eligible. Multiple jobs count together. The student must continue the required course load and maintain status.
A department may impose a lower hour limit, and graduate assistantships can have separate academic and funding conditions. Track actual hours rather than relying on the schedule.
Before the first work shift
- Ask the international office or DSO about eligibility.
- Use the university’s official student-employment portal.
- Confirm the employer and job qualify as on-campus.
- Receive the required offer and school approval.
- Complete identity, payroll and Social Security procedures as instructed.
- Start only on or after the permitted date.
- Report changes to the DSO or employer where required.
Do not use another person’s Social Security number, accept cash-only work outside the rules or begin “training” before authorisation.
Treat wages as supplemental
Campus jobs are competitive and may cover only part of personal or living expenses. Hours can fall during exams or breaks. Tuition, housing and insurance should be funded through genuine family, personal, scholarship or approved loan sources.
Use the USA financial documents checklist and USA cost guide rather than projecting an unknown job.
A simple campus-job profile
Create a one-page résumé using accurate education, skills, campus availability and work history. Read the job description and show relevant service, technical, research or communication experience. International students should not hide their status or guess about eligibility; ask the university office how to answer work-authorisation questions.
| Job family | Useful evidence | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Academic support | Subject knowledge and communication | Course performance and faculty reference |
| Technology help desk | Troubleshooting and customer service | Projects, tools and clear examples |
| Library or office | Organisation and reliability | Scheduling, records and attention to detail |
| Dining or events | Teamwork and service | Availability and safe work practices |
On-campus is not CPT or OPT
CPT and OPT have different purposes and authorisation. An internship related to the major is not automatically on-campus employment. Review the CPT vs OPT guide and consult the DSO before any off-campus activity, paid or unpaid.
Payroll is part of lawful employment
Follow the university payroll office for tax forms, bank details and identity verification. A Social Security number is used for authorised employment and tax reporting; it does not itself grant work permission. Keep the card and number private and do not send it through unverified messages.
Review every pay statement for employer, hours, pay rate and deductions. Ask the payroll or international office which tax resources apply to nonresident students. Do not copy another student’s tax filing because residency and treaty facts can differ. Retain offer letters and annual wage documents for the required period.

USCIS states that qualifying on-campus employment is generally limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session and may be full-time during official vacation periods.

USCIS says F-1 on-campus employment does not normally require a separate employment authorization document, but the student must meet conditions and follow DSO and school procedures.
Can an F-1 student start work before classes?
USCIS states that on-campus employment may not begin more than 30 days before the start of classes. The school may have additional hiring and onboarding requirements.
