Use the official motor-vehicle or licensing authority for the province or territory where the student lives. Confirm how long a visitor, student or new resident may use a foreign licence, whether an International Driving Permit is expected, when a local application is required and what address and immigration documents are accepted.

IRCC advises that a person planning to use a foreign licence should obtain an International Driving Permit in the home country. Carry the original valid Nepali licence with any required translation or permit. An IDP does not create driving entitlement when the original licence is expired, suspended or outside the permitted local period.

Ask whether Nepal has any exchange arrangement and whether prior experience can receive credit. Do not assume it will. Obtain an official driving-history or authentication record before leaving Nepal if the jurisdiction requests one, and check translation, issue-date, envelope, digital-verification and freshness requirements before paying for documents.

Study the current official driver handbook and learn signs, lane markings, school zones, pedestrian priority, emergency vehicles, impaired and distracted driving rules and collision duties. Use authorized practice materials; memorizing unofficial question banks can miss updated law and does not develop safe judgment.

The authority may require identity verification, vision screening, a knowledge test, waiting periods and one or more road tests. Graduated licences can restrict passengers, nighttime driving, alcohol, supervision or highways. Read the conditions printed on the licence and in the handbook after every stage.

Choose a reputable instructor where training is needed and verify any local certification. Keep lesson and payment records, but reject anyone selling a guaranteed pass, an inside examiner or a licence without testing. Practise only with a driver, vehicle, insurance and supervision arrangement permitted by the local stage.

Automobile insurance is mandatory to drive a personally owned vehicle, with details set provincially. Obtain quotes based on the exact driver, address, licence history, vehicle and coverage. Never provide a false address, primary driver or use because misrepresentation can invalidate coverage or a claim.

Before buying a used car, check ownership, registration requirements, liens where applicable, safety or emissions inspection rules, collision history and an independent mechanical inspection. A fresh-looking vehicle, seller’s inspection or low kilometres do not prove condition. Use a written sale record and complete official registration and tax steps.

Budget licence and test fees, lessons, insurance, registration, tax, fuel or charging, maintenance, tires, parking, tolls and depreciation. Compare that total with transit and car sharing. Transport Canada recommends winter tires on all wheels for cold, snowy or icy conditions, while legal requirements vary. Clear snow and ice, maintain lights and washer fluid, check weather and road reports, slow down, increase following distance and postpone travel when conditions are unsafe.

Never drive impaired by alcohol, cannabis, illegal drugs or medication that affects ability, and never use a handheld device contrary to law. Rest before long trips and share driving only with a properly licensed and insured person. Seat belts and appropriate child restraints must be used as required.

Carry licence, registration and insurance evidence as locally required and keep a winter emergency kit. After a collision, protect the scene, call emergency services when needed and follow local police, information-exchange and insurer reporting rules. When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.
