What ELICOS is—and is not

ELICOS stands for English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students. Study Australia describes ELICOS programs for general, professional and academic English, with courses commonly running in blocks and starting throughout the year. Registered ELICOS courses for Student visa holders must meet national standards and sit within Australia’s international education protections.

Choose the English outcome you actually need

“English course” is not one product. The right stream depends on the applicant’s present level and next course. An unsuitable General English enrolment may not provide the academic progression condition required by a university.

Study Australia indicates ELICOS durations from about five weeks to one year, while its education-system overview notes that courses may range up to 60 weeks depending on level. The provider’s assessment should determine the realistic starting level and duration.

How ELICOS can lead to another Australian course

A packaged pathway contains two or more courses with clear progression. A common sequence is ELICOS followed by Foundation, diploma, VET, bachelor or postgraduate study. Study Australia explains that one Student visa application can cover a genuine package, but each course needs its own Confirmation of Enrolment.

Home Affairs uses the principal course to determine relevant evidence at lodgement. If the Department does not request English or financial evidence upfront, it may still request it during processing.

Plan CoEs and gaps carefully

Study Australia’s current Student visa guide states that packaged courses require clear progression and a CoE for each course. Gaps are generally expected to be less than two calendar months. A three-to-four-month gap can be permitted when the first course ends with the Australian academic year in November and the next begins in February.

Do not assume a long holiday between English and the principal course is harmless. Use the exact calendar.

Current lower thresholds for eligible ELICOS packages

The current table for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 provides lower minimum scores when the principal course is accompanied by the specified amount of ELICOS. These are visa thresholds, not automatic university entry scores.

Home Affairs notes that 10 and 20 weeks are minimum package durations for the corresponding threshold. C1 Advanced is excluded from the reduced columns. From 21 January 2026, a TOEFL result for visa purposes must be registered through Taking TOEFL for Australia.

Standalone ELICOS is not a packaged bachelor pathway

When ELICOS is the only course enrolled for the Student visa application, it falls within the current English-test exemption class. This is different from ELICOS accompanying another principal course.

Verify the provider, course and campus

CRICOS is the Australian Government register of providers and courses available to people studying in Australia on Student visas. Search both the provider and the exact ELICOS course. A brand name, agent brochure or campus website alone is not enough.

Use the official CRICOS register and the MKS CRICOS checking guide. As of the fact-check date, a temporary pause runs from 19 May 2026 through 19 May 2027 on new private VET and ELICOS provider and course registrations; existing registered courses are not automatically cancelled. Current CRICOS status remains the decisive check.

What registered ELICOS should provide

Australia’s ELICOS Standards apply to registered courses and cover areas such as course design, assessment, staff, educational resources and student support. Government material describes a maximum student-to-teacher ratio of 18 to 1.

International students in ELICOS have ESOS-related protections. Read the written refund, deferral, cancellation and provider-default information before paying.

Budget the total pathway, not only weekly tuition

ELICOS prices vary by provider, city, level and duration. A safe budget adds every cost created by the pathway and any delay risk.

Compare the result with the Australia study cost guide. An ELICOS package may be educationally valuable, but it increases the time and money before the main qualification.

A safer ELICOS decision workflow

1. Take a credible English diagnostic in Nepal.
2. Set the exact destination course, intake and provider.
3. Ask whether direct entry is possible with IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or another accepted test.
4. If ELICOS is recommended, obtain the starting level, weeks, exit standard and progression guarantee in writing.
5. Verify every course and campus on CRICOS.
6. Compare total package cost with improving and retesting in Nepal.
7. Check the visa score threshold for the real package duration.
8. Review all CoEs, course gaps, principal-course details and refund terms before deposit.

Attend, progress and keep records

ELICOS is full-time study, not a visa holding arrangement. Follow provider attendance, course progress, contact-detail and assessment rules. Check visa conditions in VEVO and ask the provider how absences, illness, deferral or unsatisfactory progress are handled.

Common ELICOS pathway errors

• Choosing by weeks alone: duration should follow a valid placement assessment.
• Assuming ELICOS gives academic credit: English study usually prepares rather than shortens the degree.
• Confusing standalone and packaged ELICOS: visa English rules differ.
• Using the lower score without enough packaged weeks: 10 and 20 weeks are minimum conditions.
• Ignoring the principal course: it drives important visa evidence and priority settings.
• Failing to verify CRICOS: check course, provider and campus.
• Trusting verbal progression promises: obtain the exit standard and destination course in writing.
• Underbudgeting: include living costs and delay contingency.
