USA STEM OPT Extension Guide for Nepali Students 2026–2027

A current official-source workflow for Nepali F-1 graduates checking the degree, employer, Form I-983, filing window and reporting duties behind a 24-month STEM OPT extension.

Quick answer

A STEM OPT extension is not automatic. The student must be in valid post-completion OPT, hold a qualifying U.S. STEM degree, obtain the DSO recommendation, complete Form I-983 with a qualifying E-Verify employer and file Form I-765 within the official window.

Important: STEM OPT is an immigration benefit with strict dates. Confirm the individual case with the school DSO and current USCIS instructions before filing or changing employment.

Eligibility

Check the degree, school, student and employer together

RequirementOfficial checkEvidence to keep
Student statusValid post-completion OPTCurrent EAD and SEVIS record
Qualifying degreeCIP code on DHS STEM listDiploma, transcript and Form I-20
School statusAccredited and SEVP-certified as requiredSchool and accreditation records
EmployerE-Verify and bona fide training roleE-Verify details and signed Form I-983
ApplicationDSO recommendation and timely Form I-765Updated Form I-20 and USCIS receipt

The degree title alone is not enough. Ask the DSO for the CIP code recorded in SEVIS and compare that code with the current DHS list. A programme marketed as “STEM focused” does not qualify unless the official code and all other requirements align.

Training plan

Treat Form I-983 as a real supervision plan

The student and employer complete Form I-983 before the DSO recommends STEM OPT. The plan identifies the learning goals, direct relationship to the qualifying degree, supervision, evaluation method, worksite and compensation context. The employer signing the plan must be the entity providing the practical training and maintaining the required relationship.

Do not use a generic template that hides the real duties or client-site arrangement. Material changes require an updated plan through the DSO. The student also completes the required evaluations and submits them within the applicable reporting process.

Filing window

Build backward from the current OPT EAD

USCIS guidance current in 2026 says Form I-765 may be filed up to 90 days before the post-completion OPT EAD expires and no more than 60 days after the DSO enters the recommendation in SEVIS. The dates work together: requesting the recommendation too early or filing after the SEVIS window can create a rejection or denial risk.

Employment rules

Do not assume any job counts

USCIS requires each qualifying STEM OPT employer to provide at least 20 hours of work per week, participate in E-Verify and provide a bona fide training relationship. Volunteer work does not satisfy the STEM OPT employer requirement. Staffing, consulting, startup and off-site arrangements require careful analysis of who actually employs, supervises and trains the student.

The combined unemployment limit across regular post-completion OPT and the STEM extension is currently 150 days. Report employer changes, material training changes and required validations through the DSO on time; do not wait for the next evaluation.

While pending

Understand the limited automatic work extension

A timely and properly filed STEM OPT application may allow continued work for up to 180 days after the current post-completion OPT expires, or until USCIS issues its decision, whichever is earlier. This protection depends on a qualifying filing; a receipt does not cure an application made outside the requirements.

Travel while an application is pending can involve separate document and re-entry risks. Discuss travel, job changes, a request for evidence or a denial with the DSO and qualified immigration counsel where appropriate.

Degree planning

Choose a programme for education, not only an extension

STEM OPT can be relevant to long-term planning, but it should not replace academic fit, accreditation, cost and career value. Undergraduate applicants may use SAT where required or strategically useful. Graduate and doctoral candidates may need GRE, while some business analytics or management routes use GMAT. English requirements may include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo.

MKS Education helps Nepali students verify these programme and test requirements before admission, without promising a future immigration benefit.

No. The programme’s CIP code must appear on the current DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and the other student, school and employer requirements must also be met.

Yes. Official USCIS guidance requires a qualifying employer to participate in E-Verify and meet the training, reporting and bona fide employer-employee requirements.

When can Form I-765 be filed for STEM OPT?

USCIS currently allows filing up to 90 days before the post-completion OPT EAD expires and no more than 60 days after the DSO enters the STEM OPT recommendation in SEVIS.

Can a student keep working while a timely STEM OPT application is pending?

A timely and properly filed application may extend work authorization for up to 180 days after the current OPT EAD expires or until USCIS decides the application, whichever comes first.

Can MKS Education guarantee STEM OPT eligibility or approval?

No. MKS Education can connect degree and test planning with official programme research, but the DSO, employer and USCIS processes determine eligibility and approval.
