Protect the student record throughout the programme

The exact full-course requirement and any allowed online component depend on the education level and current rules. Use the official full-course guidance and the school’s international office instead of copying another student’s schedule.

Do not withdraw first and ask later

F-1 students generally need a full course of study. A designated school official may authorize a reduced course load only in limited circumstances recognized by the regulations, such as certain academic difficulties, medical conditions or final-term completion. The reason, timing and documentation matter.

Speak with the DSO before dropping, withdrawing, taking a leave or switching delivery mode. Approval from a professor or academic adviser alone may not update SEVIS. Keep the written DSO instruction and the revised Form I-20 when one is issued.

Treat every job and internship as a status question

F-1 work options are limited. On-campus work, curricular practical training, optional practical training and certain hardship routes have different eligibility and approval steps. The first contact should be the DSO, and some routes also require authorization from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Do not begin work because an employer, friend or online platform says payment is informal. Freelancing, remote work, unpaid roles that resemble employment and internships can still create compliance questions. Obtain written authorization that clearly covers the activity and dates before starting.

Ask before the record becomes inaccurate

• Report address and contact changes promptly through the school process.
• Discuss a major, degree-level, funding or programme change with the DSO.
• Start a transfer through the official SEVIS transfer process.
• Request a qualifying programme extension before the Form I-20 end date.
• Check completion, practical training, transfer or departure options before the post-programme period begins.
• Keep passport, Forms I-20, I-94 records, approvals and school correspondence.

If a student may already be out of status, do not attempt a hidden correction. Ask the DSO what the record shows and consider qualified immigration legal advice for reinstatement or departure options.

Make the pre-arrival plan support compliance

Choosing an achievable programme and preparing for its academic language reduces pressure after arrival. SAT preparation can support undergraduate entry where relevant; GRE or GMAT preparation should reflect the graduate, MBA or doctoral department. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo preparation should build real classroom communication, not only a minimum score.
