PTE Academic vs PTE Core: Choose the Correct Pearson Test
PTE Academic and PTE Core serve different application goals. Confirm the test named by your university or immigration authority before you book, then prepare for that test’s actual tasks.

OFFICIAL RULE FIRST
Study applications commonly call for PTE Academic; IRCC accepts PTE Core for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. A UK route may require PTE Academic UKVI instead. The receiving organisation’s current written requirement decides which result you need.
The quick answer
Choose PTE Academic when your institution or relevant authority explicitly accepts it for your study or other application. Choose PTE Core for an IRCC Canadian permanent residence or citizenship route that accepts PTE Core. If a UK visa route specifies a Secure English Language Test, check whether it calls for PTE Academic UKVI. Never assume one PTE result can be submitted for another route.
Pearson describes Academic as using academic contexts and Core as using everyday situations. Both assess speaking, writing, reading and listening at a test centre; their purposes and task sets differ.
Compare the two tests by the decision you must make
The title of the test matters more than a familiar score scale or an agent’s informal advice.
01 · STUDY AND ACCEPTED ACADEMIC ROUTES
PTE Academic
Designed around academic English. Pearson lists it for study applications worldwide and for some other accepted work, migration or registration routes.
- Check the exact university, programme or authority’s accepted test name.
- Check its minimum overall and skill scores, validity period and score-reporting method.
- Prepare for the current Academic format, including the two speaking tasks added in August 2025.
02 · CANADIAN PR AND CITIZENSHIP
PTE Core
Pearson identifies PTE Core for IRCC Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. Its everyday and workplace contexts differ from Academic’s study focus.
- Read the current IRCC programme’s accepted-test and language-level rules.
- Check whether the particular application needs Core; Canadian study requirements are a separate decision.
- Practise Core’s actual question types, including Write Email, rather than an Academic-only plan.
Three checks before paying for a test
Write the answers down with a source URL and access date. That gives you a useful record if an application requirement changes.
CHECK 1
Name the receiving body
Is this for a named university course, a Canadian IRCC programme, or a UK visa route? The same applicant can have different English-test requirements for different applications.
CHECK 2
Read the exact test name
Look for PTE Academic, PTE Core or PTE Academic UKVI in the current official requirement. Record required scores, validity, deadline and score delivery.
CHECK 3
Match the booking
Choose the matching test in myPTE, check identity details and centre availability, and review the booking summary before payment.
A Nepal-to-Canada example
A student in Kathmandu may apply to a Canadian college now and consider permanent residence later. The college’s admissions page might list PTE Academic, while an eligible future IRCC permanent-residence programme may list PTE Core. The student should verify each route independently; a score accepted by the college is not automatically an IRCC Core result.
Evidence to keep: the college programme requirement, the current IRCC programme page, the exact test names, required scores or language levels, and the date checked.

Prepare for the test you actually need
Once the route is confirmed, use current Pearson task descriptions and an official-format diagnostic. Record the original response, timing and one specific weakness; correct it, then retest on a fresh task.
- Academic: include current Speaking & Writing tasks, Reading and Listening; do not use an outdated 20-type-only checklist.
- Core: practise its everyday contexts and Core-specific tasks.
- For either test, verify official booking, identification and result-sharing instructions close to the test date.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by the word ‘PTE’ alone: match the complete test name to the receiving body’s rule.
- Using a study-test result for a different immigration route: check whether that route explicitly accepts the result.
- Following an old task list: Pearson added Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation to Academic/UKVI in August 2025.
- Trusting a general score target: the institution or authority sets the score or language level for your specific application.

Frequently asked questions
Is PTE Academic the same test as PTE Core?
No. Pearson describes PTE Academic as an academic English test used for study and other accepted routes, while PTE Core uses everyday contexts and is accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. Confirm the exact test named by your receiving organisation.
Which PTE test should I choose for Canadian permanent residence?
Pearson identifies PTE Core for IRCC permanent residence and citizenship applications. Check the current IRCC programme rules and required language level before booking.
Can I use PTE Academic for university study?
PTE Academic is designed for study applications, but an individual university or programme sets its own accepted tests, minimum scores and validity conditions. Check that institution’s current requirement.
Does PTE Academic UKVI replace PTE Core?
No. PTE Academic UKVI is a UK visa version of PTE Academic with a Unique Reference Number. It does not turn an Academic score into a PTE Core result for IRCC.
Can MKS Education choose or guarantee my official result?
MKS can help you compare requirements and prepare for the chosen test. Pearson controls test delivery and scoring; institutions and immigration authorities make their own acceptance decisions. No score, admission or visa result is guaranteed.
