Australia Personal Safety Emergency and Scam Prevention Guide for Nepali Students 2027
A calm response plan for emergencies, non-urgent police help, campus incidents, travel risks, online threats and financial or identity scams.
Build an emergency contact and location card
A short offline plan is more useful than a long list stored only in a locked phone.
Save 000, the education provider emergency and security numbers, accommodation contact, OSHC help line, trusted local contact and family details. Add the home address, campus, nearest hospital or urgent-care guidance and any critical health information. Study Australia recommends learning provider safety and wellbeing services during arrival rather than waiting for an incident.
Share travel plans selectively with trusted people, keep the phone charged and carry only necessary identity documents. Use well-lit routes and official transport. Check weather, heat, bushfire, flood, beach and water-safety advice for the location. International students have the same right to police protection and emergency assistance as others in Australia.
| Contact | Use | Store |
|---|---|---|
| 000 | Life-threatening danger police fire ambulance | Phone and offline card |
| Provider security | Campus incident or safe escort | Student portal and favourites |
| Accommodation contact | Building access or urgent housing issue | Lease and offline note |
| OSHC service | Health coverage and provider guidance | Policy card |
| Trusted contact | Check-in and practical support | Phone and written backup |
Separate emergencies from non-urgent reports
Triple Zero is for urgent danger while other police and support channels handle non-immediate matters.
Call 000 when life or safety is threatened and state the service needed and location. If English is difficult, say the language required. For non-urgent police matters Study Australia lists the Police Assistance Line on 131 444, while online portals can handle eligible minor incidents and Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous information about criminal activity. Local practice can vary, so use the official state police site.
After immediate safety is stable, tell the provider if study, accommodation or campus support is affected. Preserve incident numbers, medical evidence, messages and property records. Sexual harassment, family or domestic violence, racism and cyber abuse may require specialist confidential support in addition to police. Do not pressure a friend to confront an alleged offender or publish evidence online.
| Situation | Starting channel | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate danger | 000 | Incident and response number |
| Non-urgent police matter | 131 444 or state police route | Report confirmation |
| Campus safety | Provider security and support | Internal case reference |
| Health need | Emergency or health guidance as appropriate | Medical documents |
| Specialist harm | Confidential specialist service | Advice and safe plan |
Use Stop Check Protect for every urgent demand
Scammers impersonate banks police government employers accommodation providers and even family.
Scamwatch advises people to stop before sending money or information, check the request independently and protect accounts quickly if something went wrong. Warning signs include threats of arrest or deportation, instructions to keep a call secret, requests for gift cards or cryptocurrency, “safe account” transfers, fake jobs, rental deposits without verification and changed tuition bank details. Caller ID and personal information do not prove a caller is genuine.
Never use the phone number or link supplied in a suspicious message. Find the organisation’s contact on its official website or app and start a new communication. Discuss the demand with a trusted person; secrecy and urgency are manipulation tools. Government or police impersonators cannot solve an alleged crime by taking gift cards, cryptocurrency or a private transfer.
| Scam approach | Warning | Independent check |
|---|---|---|
| Visa or police threat | Pay now to avoid arrest or removal | Home Affairs or police official contact |
| Fake job | Fee equipment purchase or money forwarding | Employer legal identity and Fair Work |
| Rental | Deposit before inspection or agreement | Property authority and written contract |
| Tuition | Changed bank details by email | Provider finance office known number |
| Bank call | Move money to a safe account | End call and use bank app or card number |
Act fast after money or identity information is exposed
Early bank telco and account action can reduce further loss even when recovery is uncertain.
Contact the bank or card provider immediately to stop or recall transactions and secure accounts. Change email, banking, telco, myGov and other important passwords from a trusted device and enable strong multifactor authentication. Contact the telco after suspicious loss of mobile service. IDCARE offers identity and cyber support, and ReportCyber or police may be appropriate for cybercrime and identity theft.
Report the scam to Scamwatch so information can support disruption and warnings. Keep screenshots, receipts, wallet addresses, account details, usernames and report references, but do not continue communicating with the scammer to collect more evidence. Tell family quickly when the scammer may contact them. Emotional support matters because shame can delay action and increase repeat targeting.
| Exposure | Immediate action | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer | Call bank fraud team | Scamwatch and police if appropriate |
| Card details | Block card and review transactions | Replace card and credentials |
| Password | Change from trusted device | Review sessions and enable MFA |
| Passport or identity | Contact issuing and identity support | IDCARE and report reference |
| Mobile number | Contact telco about port or SIM swap | Secure bank email and myGov |
