Pathway basics

What Foundation Studies is—and what it is not

Foundation Studies is an academic preparation route specifically designed for overseas students. The Australian Government describes it as a pathway into undergraduate higher education, usually lasting six months to one year. It normally combines compulsory learning with electives in a subject stream and includes academic English support.

Australia regulates the use of the word Foundation. The national standards require a qualifying program to be delivered by a CRICOS-registered provider, operate full-time and lead academically towards first-year undergraduate study. This distinction matters because similarly named preparation, enabling, bridging, diploma and English courses may have different outcomes.

RoutePrimary purposeTypical result
Foundation StudiesPrepare an overseas student academically for a bachelor pathwayEligibility to seek first-year entry after meeting stated conditions
ELICOSBuild English-language ability for study, work or a packaged courseEnglish progression; not an academic subject pathway by itself
Diploma or VET pathwayBuild vocational or first-year-equivalent learning where a formal articulation existsPossible entry and sometimes credit, but only when the agreement says so
Direct bachelor entryBegin the undergraduate degree without a preliminary courseBest option when academic, subject and English requirements are already met
Regulatory facts

What the national Foundation Program Standards require

The Foundation Program Standards 2021 provide a useful quality checklist. A standard program runs for 26–36 teaching weeks and contains at least 720 scheduled course-contact hours. An extended program runs for 37–78 teaching weeks. Full-time means at least 20 scheduled contact hours per teaching week.

Standard requirementWhat it means for the applicantWhat to verify
CRICOS registrationThe provider and course must be approved for overseas studentsExact provider code, course code and campus on CRICOS
Academic pathwayThe program must lead towards first-year undergraduate studyNamed destination degrees and current progression grades
Generalist or streamed structureSubjects are broad or aligned to a particular fieldCorrect stream for business, science, engineering, arts or another goal
English learningStandard programs include at least 200 scheduled English-learning hoursHow academic reading, writing, presentation and integrity are taught
Published conditionsProviders must disclose pathway subjects and gradesAverage grade, subject minimums, English result and any portfolio or prerequisite
No paid work experience inside the programFoundation is academic preparation, not a work-placement courseDo not confuse it with a vocational course promising employment experience

The standards also prohibit advertising enrolment alone as guaranteed university entry without clearly stating the conditions. Read the progression table, not only the headline claim.

Nepal mapping

When Foundation Studies may fit a Nepali academic background

Australian providers assess overseas school records individually. The national standard permits entry after Australian Year 11 or a comparable level, but it requires the provider to use robust advice or research when judging overseas equivalence. A Nepali applicant should therefore request a written assessment based on the exact certificate, board, subjects, grades, completion date and intended bachelor course.

Nepal-side situationPossible planning routeCritical question
SEE completed but no Year 12-equivalent qualificationFoundation or another approved senior-secondary pathway may be consideredDoes this provider accept the applicant’s age and academic level for this intake?
NEB +2 completed but direct bachelor entry is not metFoundation may rebuild academic readiness or prerequisitesWhich exact entry condition is missing and will this program solve it?
A-level or IB result below direct entryFoundation may be available, but compare it with resitting or another pathwayIs Foundation faster, safer and more appropriate than improving the original result?
Science background moving to business or artsA generalist or business stream may be suitableWhich compulsory subjects and progression grades apply?
Management or humanities background moving to engineering or scienceA science stream may help only if it includes the required mathematics/scienceWill successful completion satisfy each degree prerequisite in writing?
Applicant already meets direct entryFoundation may add time and cost without academic needHas the university confirmed direct-entry eligibility first?

Do not choose Foundation Studies merely because it appears easier. First ask the university to assess direct entry. Then compare Foundation, diploma, ELICOS and other recognised routes against the same destination degree.

Stream choice

Match subjects to the intended bachelor degree

A streamed program is designed around a future field; a generalist program covers a wider selection. The correct stream is more important than the most convenient timetable. Engineering and many computing pathways may require mathematics; health and science routes may require chemistry, biology or other laboratory subjects; business pathways may emphasise mathematics, economics or accounting; design courses may add a portfolio requirement.

Bachelor goalFoundation subjects to checkProgression detail to obtain
EngineeringMathematics, physics and academic EnglishRequired mathematics grade and any physics prerequisite
Computer science or ITMathematics, computing or science where offeredWhether the destination course requires higher mathematics
Business or commerceMathematics, economics, accounting or business studiesAggregate score and any mathematics minimum
Health or biomedical scienceChemistry, biology, mathematics and English as relevantSubject minimums, competitive selection and separate professional rules
Arts, media or social scienceHumanities, communication, research and EnglishWriting standard, portfolio or interview if applicable
Architecture or designMathematics, design, visual communication and EnglishPortfolio, folio interview or prerequisite subject conditions

Course names alone do not prove alignment. Save the dated pathway document that links the Foundation stream to the exact bachelor title and campus.

Progression

Understand conditional and guaranteed pathways correctly

A formal Foundation pathway should identify the higher education courses available after successful completion, the subjects needed and the grades required. Some providers use the phrase “guaranteed entry,” but the guarantee is conditional on all stated academic and English outcomes, course capacity rules and any additional selection requirement.

  1. Record the Foundation provider, course code, campus, intake and stream.
  2. Record the intended bachelor provider, course code, campus and start date.
  3. Copy the required Foundation aggregate or average grade.
  4. Copy every subject-specific minimum and English condition.
  5. Check whether the progression conditions may change before completion.
  6. Ask what alternative degrees are available if the target score is not achieved.
Important: A Foundation certificate is not automatically equivalent to an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate, and progression normally means entry to first year rather than degree credit.

English evidence

Separate provider admission from Student visa rules

Foundation admission and Student visa English evidence are related but separate decisions. The national Foundation standards refer to English comparable to IELTS 5.5 overall with at least 5.0 in each skill for a standard program, and IELTS 5.0 overall for an extended program. A provider may publish accepted equivalents and can require a higher result for a particular package.

For Student visa applications made under the current 2025 instrument, the visa table includes a lower column when the principal course is accompanied by at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or when the program is a standard or extended Foundation Program or an eligible pathway program. Current figures include IELTS 5.5, PTE Academic 39 and TOEFL iBT 51 in that column. These are visa-evidence figures, not a promise that a provider or destination degree will accept the same score.

MKS Education can help applicants prepare for IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test and TOEFL according to the provider’s current accepted-test policy. Duolingo acceptance must be checked with the individual provider; it is not listed as an approved Student visa evidence test in the current Home Affairs instrument.

Visa packaging

Foundation plus bachelor on a Student visa

Home Affairs permits packaged courses. When a visa application includes more than one course, the applicant must include a valid Confirmation of Enrolment for every intended course. The final course in the package is treated as the principal course for relevant financial and English settings. Course gaps must normally be less than two calendar months, except for the stated standard academic-year exception.

  • Match personal details across every offer and CoE.
  • Confirm that the Foundation end date logically connects to the bachelor start date.
  • Use the final bachelor provider and course when the Home Affairs document tool asks for the principal course.
  • Explain why the pathway is necessary and how it supports a coherent study plan.
  • Do not assume the package removes the need to meet Genuine Student, finance, health, character or welfare requirements.

FAQ

Foundation Studies FAQs for Nepali students

What is Foundation Studies in Australia?

Foundation Studies is a full-time preparatory program designed for overseas students who need an academic pathway to first-year undergraduate study. A legitimate program is delivered by a CRICOS-registered provider and follows the national Foundation Program Standards.

Can a Nepali student enter a bachelor degree after Foundation Studies?

Yes, when the student successfully completes the program and meets the published pathway conditions for the intended bachelor degree, including any required subjects, grades and English results. Enrolment in Foundation Studies alone is not an unconditional guarantee of university entry.

How long does an Australian Foundation Studies program take?

Study Australia describes Foundation Studies as usually taking six months to one year. Under the national standards, a standard program runs for 26 to 36 teaching weeks, while an extended program runs for 37 to 78 teaching weeks.

What is the usual academic entry level for Foundation Studies?

The national standards allow admission after Australian Year 11 or a comparable educational level, subject to the provider being satisfied that the student can progress. Nepali qualifications are assessed by the provider, so applicants must obtain a written assessment rather than assume equivalence.

Is IELTS required for Foundation Studies in Australia?

Providers set their own accepted tests and admission scores within the regulatory framework. The national standard refers to English comparable to IELTS 5.5 overall with at least 5.0 in each skill for a standard program, and IELTS 5.0 overall for an extended program. Visa evidence rules are separate and must also be checked.

Can Foundation Studies and a bachelor degree be packaged on one Student visa?

They can be included in a packaged offer when the providers arrange the pathway and issue a Confirmation of Enrolment for each course. Home Affairs requires all CoEs in the visa application and treats the final course as the principal course for relevant visa settings.

Does Foundation Studies give university credit?

A Foundation Studies program normally prepares a student for entry to first year rather than providing degree credit. Credit should never be assumed; verify the written progression and credit terms for the exact course.

How should I verify a Foundation Studies provider?

Search the provider and exact course on CRICOS, confirm the CRICOS codes and delivery location, then read the current progression table showing destination degrees, prerequisite subjects and required grades before paying a deposit.
