TOEFL Requirements to Study in Australia from Nepal 2027

A current TOEFL iBT guide for Nepali applicants covering Australian university admission Student visa thresholds the January 2026 score-scale update secure-centre rules and a practical preparation plan.

Fact-checked: 25 July 2026TOEFL iBT · University entry · Student visa evidenceOfficial-source workflow

Quick answer: TOEFL iBT is accepted by Australian universities and is an approved English test for eligible Subclass 500 Student visa applications. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 the current Home Affairs table lists TOEFL iBT minimum totals of 67 for the standard route, 51 with an eligible 10-week ELICOS, Foundation or Pathway arrangement, and 37 with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS. From 21 January 2026 you must register using “Taking TOEFL for Australia” for a result intended for Australian visa purposes. University and course admission requirements can be higher, may include section minimums, and must be checked separately.

Separate the three English checks

A single TOEFL score can be used in different decisions, but the decision-makers do not apply one universal cut-off. A Nepali applicant should create three separate rows in the application tracker: the education provider, the Student visa and any professional registration or placement requirement.

CheckWho sets itWhat to verify
Course admissionAustralian university, college or pathway providerOverall score, section minimums, accepted test date and whether MyBest scores are accepted
Student visaAustralian Department of Home AffairsApproved test, secure delivery, registration pathway, score threshold, test validity and any exemption
Professional or placement requirementRelevant registration body, faculty or placement partnerHigher English standard, individual skill scores and test-age rules where applicable

Meeting the visa minimum does not guarantee admission. Likewise, an admission offer does not remove a visa evidence request. Start with the exact course page, compare it with your offer conditions, then check the current Home Affairs Student visa page.

Current TOEFL iBT thresholds for the Student visa

The table below reflects the current Home Affairs thresholds for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Reduced scores apply only when the principal course is accompanied by the specified eligible English or pathway arrangement. Do not assume that planning to study English later is enough; the package and course structure must satisfy the official condition.

Student visa study arrangementCurrent TOEFL iBT minimumPlanning note
Principal course without the listed packaged arrangement67Treat this as the visa floor, not a university admission target
Principal course with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, a Standard or Extended Foundation program, or an eligible Pathway program51Confirm that the packaged arrangement is recorded correctly and is eligible
Principal course with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS37Confirm duration, sequence and principal-course details before relying on the lower score

The 2025 Student visa English instrument commenced on 7 August 2025 and lists TOEFL iBT among the approved tests. It also describes the relevant test period and eligible pathways. Immigration settings can change, so re-check the live visa page immediately before lodgement.

2026 rule

Register through “Taking TOEFL for Australia”

From 21 January 2026, Home Affairs states that applicants must select Taking TOEFL for Australia when registering if the result will be used for Australian visa purposes. A normal TOEFL booking or a result registered under another pathway may not satisfy the visa rule even when the numeric score is high enough.

Important: TOEFL iBT tests completed from 26 July 2023 through 4 May 2024 are not accepted for Australian visa and migration purposes. A new 2027 applicant should normally plan a current test, but anyone relying on an older result must check the exact test date.

Score update

Understand the 1–6 scale introduced in January 2026

TOEFL iBT score reports changed on 21 January 2026. ETS now reports four section scores and an overall score on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments. During a two-year transition, the official report also includes a comparable overall estimate on the familiar 0–120 scale. This matters because Australian providers may update their admissions pages at different speeds.

ETS provides the following common requirement alignment for institutions: 70 with 3.5, 80 with 4, 90 with 4.5 and 100 with 5. These are transition guides, not automatic entry scores for every Australian course.

Admission target

Find the TOEFL requirement for your exact Australian course

Australian universities set their own admission standards. Within one university, a general bachelor degree, education program, nursing program and research degree may have different English conditions. The safest method is course-first research rather than choosing a test target from a generic university list.

  1. Open the exact course page for the intended 2027 intake.
  2. Confirm the campus, study level, CRICOS registration and international entry section.
  3. Record the TOEFL overall requirement and every Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing minimum.
  4. Check whether the provider accepts the updated 1–6 scale, the comparable 0–120 estimate and MyBest scores.
  5. Check how old the result may be on the course start date, not only the application date.
  6. Save a dated PDF or screenshot and request written clarification when the page is ambiguous.

Use the CRICOS checking guide before paying, and connect the result with the Australia admission requirements guide.

Test format

Prepare for the current TOEFL iBT, not an old pattern

The updated TOEFL iBT measures Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Reading and Listening are adaptive, while Writing and Speaking use the current task types. ETS advises allowing approximately two hours for the complete appointment including directions; the scored test time can vary because of the adaptive design.

SectionCurrent task focusPreparation priority
ReadingComplete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic PassageVocabulary in context, speed, inference and academic comprehension
ListeningShort responses, conversations, announcements and academic talksAccurate notes, purpose, attitude and detail recognition
WritingBuild a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic DiscussionGrammar control, organisation, concise response and evidence
SpeakingListen and Repeat and Take an InterviewIntelligibility, fluency, direct answers and controlled timing

Do not prepare only with pre-2026 templates. Verify the current format on the ETS test content and structure page and practise the actual task families. A template can support organisation, but memorised language that does not answer the prompt will not demonstrate real academic communication.

Planning

Build a Nepal-to-Australia TOEFL timeline

Work backward from the earliest university deadline, scholarship deadline, Confirmation of Enrolment target and visa preparation window. Your TOEFL result should be available before a decision depends on it, with room for a second attempt if the first score misses an overall or section condition.

StageRecommended actionControl point
ShortlistChoose courses and collect official TOEFL requirementsOne row per course and intake
DiagnosticTake a timed current-format baselineRecord all four skills, not only the overall level

ReportingSend official scores through the accepted channelConfirm the provider received the result
Visa fileKeep the score report, booking details and offer conditions togetherRe-check current Home Affairs rules before submission

ETS states that TOEFL scores are valid for two years, and Home Affairs applies its own test-age rules to Student visa evidence. These periods can overlap differently with admission and course commencement, so avoid testing so early that the score expires during the application cycle.

Decision support

TOEFL, IELTS and PTE are alternatives—not identical strategies

Choose the test after checking acceptance, task fit, available dates and the score needed for every selected course. A student comfortable with integrated academic tasks and computer delivery may prefer TOEFL. Another may perform better with the IELTS or PTE format. The best choice is the accepted test that matches both the applicant and the target program.

Avoid delays

Common TOEFL mistakes by Australian applicants

  • Booking the wrong route: from 21 January 2026, select Taking TOEFL for Australia for visa use.
  • Using Home Edition for the visa: provider acceptance does not override the secure-centre visa rule.
  • Targeting only 67: the course or faculty may require a higher overall or section result.
  • Ignoring the new scale: use the official report showing both formats during the transition.
  • Assuming MyBest acceptance: each institution decides whether to accept it.
  • Missing section minimums: a strong total does not repair a failed skill condition.
  • Preparing with an old format: use resources aligned with the post-January-2026 test.
  • Sending unofficial evidence: follow the provider and visa instructions for official reporting.

Keep the English plan aligned with the Australia application timeline and the Australia documents checklist.
