Separate course PTE from visa PTE

The education provider decides whether PTE Academic is accepted for the selected course and what overall and skill scores apply. Home Affairs separately sets the Student visa English evidence rule. A professional course or registration authority can add another standard.

A visa-eligible PTE score does not guarantee university entry. A university offer also does not prove that the visa English requirement has been met.

PTE Academic thresholds checked for 2026 planning

For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 Home Affairs publishes the following Student visa thresholds. These are overall immigration thresholds and should not be presented as universal university admission scores.

Home Affairs publishes a different table for tests taken on or before 6 August 2025. Match the threshold to the actual test date and re-check immediately before lodging. The Department may request English evidence during processing even when it was not initially listed for attachment.

Do not copy a generic PTE number

Pearson explains that institutions set their own minimum scores and gives broad typical study ranges: 36–50 for foundation courses 51–60 for undergraduate degrees and 57–67 for postgraduate degrees. These are orientation ranges only. The selected Australian provider may set a different overall score and skill floors.

If the course page is unclear send the admissions team the course code intake and the phrase “PTE Academic overall and communicative skill minimums” and request a written answer.

Book PTE Academic for the Australian pathway

Pearson describes PTE Academic as a computer-based secure test for university professional and migration applications including Australia. Test takers attend a secure Pearson Test Center and use a computer and headset. Do not book a differently branded Pearson test because the name looks similar.

Home Affairs does not accept fully online or at-home English tests for Student visa evidence. A remote test accepted by an institution would still need a separate valid visa pathway.

Prepare for the current PTE Academic test

PTE Academic is a computer-based test of Speaking Writing Reading and Listening completed in a single session of about two hours. Pearson organises the test into three parts. Since 7 August 2025 the format includes two additional Speaking and Writing question types: Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation.

Use material reflecting the post-August 2025 format. Old templates that omit the two newer tasks cannot provide a complete simulation.

Understand integrated skills and score consequences

PTE Academic reports an overall score and skill results on a 10–90 scale. Some question types contribute to more than one skill. Pearson uses automated scoring and also describes human expert review for aspects of certain content-related responses in the current format.

Do not chase one headline overall score while ignoring the skill profile required by the course. Track the lowest skill and the question types that contribute to it.

Build performance around current task demands

• Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence: practise clear phrasing controlled pace accurate sequence and immediate recovery without restarting repeatedly.
• Describe Image and Retell Lecture: organise the main message and supporting detail instead of reciting a fixed template.
• Summarize Group Discussion: identify the topic speaker contributions relationships and key conclusions in your own words.
• Respond to a Situation: use an appropriate purpose tone and complete response that remains natural.
• Summarize Written Text and Essay: respect current form and word limits while maintaining relevance grammar coherence and vocabulary control.
• Reading and Listening tasks: combine language knowledge with exact format practice and error analysis.

Choose by evidence not popularity

Both PTE Academic and IELTS are on the current Student visa approved list and are widely used for Australian admission. The better choice is the test accepted by the course that matches the applicant’s demonstrated strengths and available preparation time.

Take a full diagnostic in each format before switching. Convenience is not enough if the chosen course does not accept the result or the skill profile is far below target.

• Any English pathway is correctly packaged with transparent progression and costs.

• Copies of the score offer CoE and submitted application are stored securely.
