University of Wisconsin–Madison Precollege Programs for International Students
The University of Wisconsin–Madison offers a range of precollege programs through its Badger Precollege initiative, welcoming international high school students aged 15–18. These programs provide an opportunity to experience U.S. university life, enhance academic skills, and engage in cultural exchange.
Available Programs
Wisconsin International Precollege Academy (WIPA)
- Format: In-person
- Dates: June 28 – July 18, 2025
- Eligibility: International students aged 15–18
- Program Fee: $5,100 (plus a nonrefundable $100 application fee)
- Application Deadline: May 1, 2025
- Scholarships: Partial scholarships available for students with financial need; applications due by March 24, 2025
- Highlights: Interactive workshops on sustainability, college preparation, leadership, and cultural excursions
Wisconsin International Precollege Academy Online (WIPA Online)
- Format: Online
- Session 1: July 7 – August 6, 2025 (Mondays & Wednesdays, 7:00–9:30 AM CT)
- Session 2: July 29 – August 28, 2025 (Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:00–7:30 PM CT)
- Program Fee: $550
- Registration Opens: December 2024
- Scholarships: Partial scholarships available; applications due by March 24, 2025
- Highlights: Focus on critical thinking, research skills, and college readiness
Accelerated Learning Program (ALP)
- Format: In-person
- Dates: June 29 – July 18, 2025
- Eligibility: Talented students from Wisconsin, the nation, and the world
- Highlights: Intensive three-week residential program with a focus on a single course, fostering academic growth and social connections
Badger Summer Scholars
- Format: In-person
- Dates: July 20 – August 1, 2025
- Highlights: Transformative residential learning across various academic areas, including college application workshops
Summer Music Clinic Senior
- Format: In-person
- Dates: June 29 – July 5, 2025
- Highlights: Opportunities to play, sing, create, and learn about music at all experience levels
Support for International Students
Badger Precollege provides various support services to ensure a positive experience for international students:
- Residential Assistants (RAs): Dedicated RAs work closely with international students to create a fun and educational atmosphere.
- Orientation Sessions: Comprehensive sessions covering program information, expectations, and cultural insights.
- Cultural Activities: Special activities aimed at creating cultural awareness and introducing students to Madison and UW–Madison.
English Proficiency Requirements
To ensure success in the programs, students are recommended to have:
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 80
- IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5
- Duolingo English Test: Minimum score of 105
Note: If test scores are unavailable, students may request a phone or video interview with program staff to assess English proficiency.
Visa Information
International students participating in in-person programs are required to obtain a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa. It is recommended to bring the program admission letter and other supporting documents to the visa interview. The University of Wisconsin–Madison cannot advise on visa procedures; students should consult the U.S. State Department website for detailed information.
